OK OK .... Yo Cuda ..... actually I don't believe that you dove under the flame at night, do you have any thing to prove it????? .. (just joking). Carig thailand..... just go for it.... the way you like man, the only thing that you should think about is your safty... A monster like that could put you in serious troubles..... make 100% sure of your float line, any small tangle with a thing like that could cost you your life ..... Or even worse ... if you miss him and he come back to you ... make sure to give him a good reason for shooting at him!!!!! no modern spearo's in this world spear to eat!!!! ... its the sport and the Adrenalin ... else you can go ...sell one of your masks and buy 30 kg of fish to eat and feed your family!!!!!! |

Hiya
I've seen some of the catch's Nesim has posted. You guys are EXTREMELY fortunate to have such good spearing!!! Why you guys are interested in spearing sharks is simply beyond my comprehension. There's not much challenge shooting those SMALL little sharks posted in the earlier pictures. They'll bend your spear and possibly try and take a chunk out of you, but at that size, they're not much danger to a spearo. You guys want some sports, why not TRY and shoot a proper shark?? Something like a 3m Mako or a 3m Tiger or a 4m Great White or a 3m Bull/Zambezi sharks?? That aught to be LOADS of fun!!! I'd actually PAY to see any of you guys even get INTO the water with a big brute like that swimming around. The problem arises on where to draw the line. If i follow the reasoning of the members in the threads above, then, is it ok to spear dolphins? What about manta rays? Or sunfish (mola-mola)? Or even whales for that matter!! See what i'm getting at?? I consider small sharks to be part of my diving experience. Something to brighten up my dives. Just like big rays and sunfish (mola-mola). I too hunt for the sport, but targetting sharks simply isn't sporting!! It's reckless, wastefull and gives spearfisherman a bad name. Whats missing here is simply respect for marine life. Remember, when you're out spearfishing, you are NOT the apex predator!! Be safe and be the hunter and NOT the hunted......... Just my .02c worth..... Regards miles ps. some pictures of sharks that you should be on the look-out for......

Agreed.......... it really does come down to where WE draw the line INDIVIDUALLY, don't you think. I know how experienced you are in this sport and how relatively new I am to it, I don't pretend to be some kind of guru but I was wondering have you ever killed a shark? Amphibious seems to be very experienced in this sport and has gone from EVIL SHARK KILLER
to acceptable member of the community , what about you? It seems a little weird that so many people shoot 'x years old' giant tuna with out battering an eye lid, but moan about someone that wants to kill a single shark in his life. If these people were vegetarians I would say "you have a strong and valid opinion" If these people were not vegetarians I would ask them if they think shark fins are collected humanly and how many they think are killed a year? If these people were spearos that are in the same oceans as me, doing the same thing as me, but killing a fish with a different name I would have to ask them where the real difference is at With regards to shooting dolphins or Mola Mola, turtles or whales, well maybe there are some people on here that would think that is acceptable, I don't personally but I would have to respect the others opinion, don't you agree? For example I don't eat octopus or cuttlefish because I think they are amazing creatures but my wife loves to eat it. What can I do?, make her stop because I don't agree, like hell I would be the next thing on a plate. My point is exactly the same as Miles' it is all about where we draw the line as individuals. I think as spearos we all have a list in our heart of hearts that says what is acceptable and what is not (with regards to target species I mean) we may have a wish list of what we want to shoot before we miss the chance for me the 2 I seek are a sailfish and the other is a shark. Now, I see pics of divers with huge marlin that they have shot or giant bluefin and yellowfins and that is classed as ok by the majority, for me marlin should be left in the ocean where they deserve to be, but that is just my personal opinion about that species, nothing more. Miles - I was kind of planning on having a slightly more level playing field than going up against a 3 or 4 meter monster like you mentioned, and even though you are willing to pay, I would have to decline your offer of diving with them beasts. Miles please don't misunderstand me as some control freak that needs to get his fix of testosterone through killing his way to the top. I realize that these sharks are the most awesome predators in the water and would eat me for breakfast. To be frank they scare the hell out of me , but I never claimed to be doing this for the glory. I would like to take a single shark in my life time it is on MY wish list. If you think about it, so few sharks go to spearos it is really a miniscule difference that it makes, I understand that one more is worse than one less in the opinion of the masses but looking at the big picture is it really a big issue. It is not like I will be killing sharks whenever I dive, it would be one for myself. I realize that I am a member of the minority here, but we still have an opinion on this topic and although a lot of people may disagree there are some that still have sharks on their lists. no modern spearo's in this world spear to eat!!!! ... its the sport and the Adrenalin ... Agreed buddy, I am glad that you feel the same way, we all eat what we shoot but it is the thrill of the chase that keeps me hooked not just the great tasting steaks. Talking about floats, what size float do you think would be needed for a shark of say 2 meters? I caught a 2 meter tiger and we attached a oil drum to a runner then on the swivel then let it swim and it disappeared a couple of times. Or even worse ... if you miss him and he come back to you ... make sure to give him a good reason for shooting at him!!! Ha Ha Ha..... must get some target practice in. ![]() |

Back to the original question of what type of Shark it is, it looks like a Bronze Whaler to me.
I caught AND RELEASED a few a couple of years ago in Namibia. I’ll post a picture next week. All the Sharks we caught went back to the sea with no harm done. Probably to take revenge on the first spearo they come across!!!!! |

I also thought it was a bronze whaler. I didnt' think you got Silkies in the Gulf region.

pretty sure there are silkies in the gulf, but I could be mistaken. we caught a lot of "reef sharks" that we assumed were silkies when I lived in saudi.

A silky is a pelagic shark though... rarely come to the reefs except for cleaning.

Sorry, the website seems to have some trouble opening, or it could be the office computer.
Anyways go to www.fishbase.org type in silky and away you go!! It is a real cool site, you can even select your own country and it will list what fish are found there, when they were found, how big the specimens were etc. |
