allot of places to dive here, it depends if your going to dive inshore or deep sea!!??
the easiest one to go is the old reef... At C-line area, to the left side of the resort. there is also Al Odaid area .. allot of nice places there, but you need a 4X4 and a good guide to take you there.... don't go alone if you don't know it. some nice places near Dukhan. but don't expect allot of reefs here, are you into spearfishing or diving only??? PM me if you need more info. will be glad to help. |

The pics of the sharks in the start of the thread seemed to have a more profound black tip than that whaler. Does the colour vary from shark to shark??

Time and time again I see people attempting to justify the taking of sharks, or rare fish (or any fish) with the line "the commerical fishos do way more damage". What a cop out. If you think your fishing style is sustainable, say so. Dont use the "its ok to do it because other people do more of it anyway" excuse. Thats like me claiming its ok to kill a person because Hitler murdered 6 million people. Its doesnt make any sense. It makes spearos look like idiots. Promote the sustainability of spearfishing, dont try to deflect criticism by pointing at the mistakes of others. It doesnt put your activity into perspective, it just makes you look like part of the problem. ![]()

It seems as though you may have seen this type of situation arise on forums many times in the past. Unfortunatly the vibe i get from most people is that they are not so concerned about the sustainability of the sport, more about the pain that the animal goes through. That was more my point about the shark finners, but again you are right because justifying ones actions against the mistakes or actions of others is not correct either. I really find it hard to justify this part of spearfishing, it is not putting that animal in pain that satisfys us but some people tend to confuse the overall situation.
It may seem as though i am passing the proverbeal 'hot potatoe' here but, how do you get around this obstacle that I am sure as a seasoned spearo have encountered many times? I tend to explain that we eat what we kill, reply being why don't you buy it from the market; and there we are back at square one again. |

Talking about killing ... man there is still people in this region are killed in dozens every day, and countries burned!!! ... not for there meat ... but for there OIL!!!!!!! is it any better than Hitler??? do you think that there is any need to justify killing any more??? I Wonder if the seasoned men watch TV!!!!! .... you and your brother are spearing HUMANS??? I wonder how the same people fight for animal rights, and totally forget what they are doing in the other hand??? My fellow I don't and will not justify my spearfishing .... and I think its a good idea to spear DOLPHINS too ... first and last they are FISHES & at least they will die FREE!!!! For that dolphin bit Sanadw This is the type of stuff that gives spearos a bad reputation. If you want to go spear a dolphin go out and do it but dont voice your opinion on it on a open forum on the net for all to see. We must think about the ramifications of what we say and do and how it gets portrayed to the rest of the world who have no idea as to what spearfishing is and how we harvest fish from the sea, they think were murdering commandos allready, dont give them reason to justify those thoughts...

Deepthinker - I think that Sanadw finds it a bit frustrating that he has to some how justify his personal likes and dislikes of spearfishing to a fellow spearo, i feel much the same way to be honest. Why should i have to justify what i do to anyone, we are all shooting fish just that we shoot different ones to you guys that is all.
Shadow killer - This is a place where i feel we should be able to talk freely about what we enjoy in this sport without having to worry about coming under attack from others, i get enough of that on the beach after a shore dive. Listening to others points of view is a great way to learn more about our own actions, and how they effect others, but blatently attacking someones opinion and telling them they are wrong is not a great start to a conversation. As this site and particularly this forum is mostly graced by the presence of Spearos it seems hard to believe that anything said in here would make any kind of effect on the outside world. Lets not forget that the general public dont really look at these sites so much. I tend to get a bit carried away when i am typing about something that i love as much as this, and it is good to see i am not the only one. We all love spearing even if we love some aspects more than others, lets just remember that we are all part of the same gang here, the DB gang. Sanadw - I don't think we need to justify our preferances regarding spearfishing anymore than we do our preferances towards breakfast. More importently are you any closer to identifying that shark? |

Craig I know what Sanad is tryin to get across and I doubt he really wants to shoot a dolphin and I have nothing against his personal opinion, but that is not a way to try and get a point across. As for its mostly spearos here, its very easy to bump into this thread by simply typing dolphins or sharks into your google search tab. We are all spearos and love our sport, hobby, way of life, what ever we want to call it alot, so we should want people to see it in a positive way and portay ourselfes as responsible individuals who love the ocean dearly. If I didnt know any better and I bumped into a statement like that I wouldnt be a happy camper. Hope this clears it up I didnt go after him as a person or spearo, just the way hes trying to make a point, its iresponsible...
