Dolphins are MAMMALS. Not fish. --------------------------------------- As for "attacking" opinions: Isn't that the point of a discussion? Should I not disagree with you? What? I disagree with what you stated earlier. Get over it. Using commerical fishing practices to justify spearfishing is stupid. Period. Spearfishing is a sustainable way to fish, minimises the pain and distress to fish, if they are killed quickly. End of story. Notice how I didnt have to make any references to shark finning, or dolphin killing for that matter. If you want to respond to peoples reservations about spearfishing don't attempt to deflect criticism, answer it! Deflecting criticism (by say ranting about the war on oil) makes people look like they have something to hide. Politicians do it all the time, and no one believes them... And for those of you who don't believe you need to be able to justify an activity in todays "ban everything" society... Good luck.

I think its sad that reality should be ignored in this discussion. I really do. I spend a lot of time arguing with university Scientists and Government officials over this very point. I try to get the sustainability message across, but a bit of support would be nice. And given the huge amount of karma I have been gifted from the last two posts, numerous DB members agree with me...

I was talking about killing sharks, not justiying the reasons why we spear fish, i would have thought that muich was obvious. Our original discussion was regarding the killing of sharks not the sustainabilty of spearfishing. If you read my post i already said that i agree with you on the point of sustainability. It is easier to make a comparison than to explain to most people who complain about spearing and forget about it the next day. What i don't agree with you on is making a mountain out of a molehill, with regards to me killing A shark. I hope this is clear enough for you now!!!! This is my last post on this topic, if you insist on bantering on about sustainability to me it is falling on deaf ears because i worked that much out when i was about 8 years old, son of a trawlerman sees alot of fish being pulled out of one hual, and one fish on a spear. Do the math. The anoying thing is we both have came to the same conclusion but we arrived there by walking different paths, stick to university Scientists and Government officials, they are the ones that need convincing, not your own kind. Best Regards

Thanks Carig.... I don't have to replay now, thats pretty much it!!!
just drench the meat with wine or vinegar all night long, better to keep it in the refrigerator.... this will take all the ammonia out of the meat and will make it taste very good. ![]() |

By the way, does anyone know if there are Tiger sharks in the Persian Gulf? and how about bull sharks?
Also, im surprised that according to ISAF, Iran has the highest shark attacks of all countries of Asian continent (although the latest fatalities dates from 1985). Map of Asia's Confirmed Unprovoked Shark Attacks Regards

I've dove with tigers off the saudi coast, Kiran Island (turtle nesting ground/sactuary) and bull sharks (or a close sub species) exist in most coastal waters in the gulf.
keep your eyes open, but I wouldn't be worried to much.

Man I am diving in qatar for more than 10 years and never saw a bull or a tiger!!!!! non of all my firends ever saw one, not even catch one with lines!!! If those sharks really exist in the gulf for sure they can't live in the shallow waters around QATAR. I think the place that you are talking about in Kiran island is very deep?? man my friend Baracuda dove near rigs in a very deep water at night maybe hummer heads but tigers and bulls ..... now way. post a new topic and lets see if any saw one here ever???? |

they are there, but as non sustainable fishing practices have left the gulf a nearly dead fishery, it would go to logic that shark numbers would be dwindling as well.
no where in the gulf is very deep. have only seen 10 or so tigers and they were all in shallow water, usually from the relative safety of a swimgrid there are lots of bulls in the gulf. just because you don't see them doesn;t mean they arn't there. I spent 18yrs in Saudi arabia, many of those diving around bahrain and the saudi coast north of quatar. the gulf fishery is dying very quickly, largely do to gillnets and trapping. if you haven't seen a shark in the gulf in the last ten years, I doubt very much your chances wuill improve in the next ten. the last bullshark I caught on a rod in the gulf was in 1.5m of water off a shallow sandy beach at night, about 40m from shore.

man thats definitely long long time ago!!!
now every thing changed, so much CONSTRUCTION day and night in qatar,Bahrain and for sure UAE. and don't forget the temp. raise too!!! we used to see or sometimes catch Hummer heads on lines.... but now they are really very rare too. and its not only me ..... I know more than 20 spearos and fishermen here who spend time in water more than land and none of them ever saw or catch one from such a long time! I think the shark attacks chart says it all..... nothing since 1985. |
