when you get chomped on by a shark looking for an easy meal (dead fish on a stringer) can I have your gear?
the animal doesn;t need to be agressive, all sharks are scavengers and oportunistic predators. having dead fish around your waist is a bad idea all around. again, the seat belt analogy seems fitting.

Thank you for your feedback and this why i am posting this video to learn from you guys and from your experience. Well I have been diving in Qatar for the last three years almost every single weekend as long as the weather is nice and we never sow any shark but again maybe I need to think about my seat belt. We went diving today as well and we took some nice video and will share it with you guys later AND we put into practice your advice regarding the knife Thanks again for sharing this.

well that post was not directed at you. but after 15yrs+ diving and spearfishing in the gulf I may not be an expert, but am damn close. when you see your first shark attack, and after you're finnished vomiting from the sight, please PM me and let me know if your opinions have changed about wearing fish on your belt.

When i used to spearfish in virginia, i would never carry fish on me and i never even saw a shark in the water.
Just last year i went back to do some hook and line fishing. I hooked a stripped bass about 12 lbs and a shark came up to the surface and swallowed it! It was over a 10 ft shark. Mind you, this is the same area i spearfish! After seeing that, im glad i never put fish on me when i was freediving. Btw, sharks like to attack on top of the water too. |

In Southern California almost all of us shore divers and even some boat divers swim around with fish attached to us. I have not heard of anyone in California eaten by a Great White due to fish on their belt. They attack because we look like seals floating on the surface. And we happen to have relatively few GW in So Cal. So the chances of an attack are very small. Swimming around with fish on you here is 99.9% safe.
