I live in NYC but do my spearing via shore entry at my grandfather's place in RI. I'm looking for anyone interested in chartering a boat to some deeper waters. I could use a good dive buddy for that. I've been spearing for 3 years now. My max depth was 50ft this January in Baja California, I'm pretty comfortable in the 30-40ft range.

I was about to post a RI question. I'm there every summer and I spend a lot of time on Block Island. I've got a boat so if you're still interested let me know. I'm usually in 10-30 feet of water, as that's where most of the fish I shoot are...but I'm willing to try some deeper hunting.

Spearing in RI is usually great, the past year was a little thin. Water temp peaks around 70 in August and is in the 60s and high 50s for the rest of the season, (May to November), though I haven't done much spearing that late in the season. Vis is not great where I go along the coast, 5-10 ft. is acceptable, every now and then you'll get 20 ft. days, have had success when visibility falls below 5 ft., just have to be patient. I don't have underwater structures where I dive, but I believe there are wrecks out near block island. Typically I dive in rocky and sandy bottom areas, I'm talking huge granite boulders here that were dumped by the glaciers, some 20 ft. tall. Mostly hunt Striped Bass, though I have taken Blue Fish and Black Fish in the past. Blue Fish are fast and dangerous, don't shoot at them when they're in schools, they've been known to attack people and have very sharp teeth. Black fish are dumb as a box of rocks, no challenge there. Stripers are big and beautiful, its a great feeling to get towed by a big striper.
How's the hunting in Miami? I'm actually heading down there in April for work. What kind of season do you have? |

I am in NYC spearo also and looking to get to RI this summer for the first time. I still need to invest in a wet suit. PM me sometime. I have a lot of time off during the week not as much on the weekends.

I recently talked to Alexrom1207, we are planning on doing some RI spearfishing this summer. Perhaps we could all meet up sometime? I've been using a Hawaiian sling, but had my eyes set on a Riffe gun so I can go for some bigger fish. Keep in touch guys.

Sounds great guys. Let me know when you think youŽll be up in Rhode Island. I should start heading up there in May and June (rather eager to get back at it). Do you have cold weather wet suits?

Definitely recommend the Riffe, great guns. I use a 48 biller, which is good for these waters but I'm going to switch the shaft from the bulky exchangeable rockpoint tip that the billers all come with to a more streamlined Hawaiian flopper style, like the Riffe to get better accuracy and a quicker shot. Fasttruck, it's be great to have you come along. Always looking for another spearing buddy.
