Small but good strobe?

I've realised I won't get much further in photographing with my built-ni flash, but I don't want my housing much bulkier. So now I'm looking for a small, flexible and strong (AND cheap) strobe. Any ideas?

I'm also thinking of just putting a good torch on a strobe-arm. Anyone tried that?
