Re: Live from Egypt 2006

Doesnt even have to be that big. Some guy with a webcam pointing over the pool and some decent bandwith would be enough. Or a couple of el cheapo webams over the same pool to share bandwith between them.
But then again , broadband internet in egypt may be not that easy as it is in some other areas.

guys cool down, i dont recall seeing any training video clips of the soccer world cup do you? i mean all the games were on coded channels for crying out loud where you would have to subscribe to watch... so maybe take it a tad easier on the guys here...
best of luck to your teams...
and by the way there is internet connection in broad band here, and we all moved out of the pyramids years ago

The teams have time until 5th to announce their final starting list (most teams came with a reserve competitor) and to announce the performances. And I guess you won't hear from anyone before that, since keeping it under cover is quite strategic now. Same goes for current performances realized in trainings - it is not too likely someone will publish them, and if he/she does, there is the big question if it is the truth or just a strategic maneuverer to push the concurrents to either too low or too high bid.

The competition starts with 3 days of CWT on Wednesday, so we won't have any results until then. Well, seeing how abandoned the official site is, I doubt too whether there will be anything posted there at all, but I am sure, there will be enough information coming from different people there. And, you can bet that they will not place any web-cam or stream any video on the Internet - finally they sell the TV broadcasting rights, so they would really piss off all those channels who bought them for big money.

Re: Live from Egypt 2006

My point was merely that tv-broadcasts are so last century...

This is a sport that has a hand full of spectators here and another there...Literally on different corners of the globe. The only reasonable way to reach any kind of coherent audience would be broadcasting in the net...But that's yet to happen and I'm glad to see that there are at least cameras rolling(and at least by the schematic, pretty impressive set up too) and we may at least get a climpse of the goodies at some point. Just wish it was now And as a general comment, for any marginal sport, such a service where one could easily stream up live video and have it accessible to anyone in the world cheap - I would think it would be revolutinary. Just add a few ads here and there and you're set reaching thousands or millions instead of group of hc-enthusiasts and friends who actually show up on location. The technology is there, the event is there, the audience is there...But the service is missing. Simply the fact that we sit here wishing it to happen is telling that there is an imbalance of supply and demand. And where such an imbalance exists, especially when the demand is higher than the supply, there is usually money to be made...I'm not saying the WC is the right target group for this, but certainly national level competitions etc. Hmm...To think about it, I guess p2p live video streaming would work too. Will have to try and set something like that up for fun...

Regarding results and such - I'm aware that the competition hasn't started yet. It's just that it is very, very rare for any freedive competition to have the results up in any reasonable time - and that's really the only thing that the "spectators" want. So I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprsied, but remain sceptical. The nice exception was Nice last year, when you could follow those green/red flags being updated almost in real time. True, that is facinating only to the freediving geeks, but then again - who else is even watching?

That may be true (at least for me anyway - I do not watch TV since years), but it is the TV broadcasters who pay the bills. I am afraid that without selling the broadcasting rights, the competition could not take place at all, or just in very limited version and rudimentary conditions. Today, aside from some porn websites, and pay-per-view services, you still won't find any Internet broadcaster that would be able of such investments. They usually cannot even afford buying broadcasting rights for much more popular sports than freediving, so there is very little chance they could afford investing into an event with such small audience.

Re: Live from Egypt 2006

Well thank god then that we all can get Nile TV so we can follow the event broadcasts

And the official site to me officialy suck since it does not even show the teams competing. Couple of names and pictures of the teams would be a bare minimum.

Marwan,
Pity you moved out of the pyramids, since that would be realy cool a webcam in a pyramid

Re: Live from Egypt 2006

I don't think the official website is being touched, or will be.

Lets just say that it's a bit crazy here in the desert, hopefully the comp will proceed as planned, there are a lot of people holding their breaths on it (quite literally).

That said, everyone's having a ball and there's plenty of PB stories going around. In fact one guy here not even competing just along for the ride did a 6:48 static today, about 2 minutes better than his previous, he said that the warm water agrees with him.

Constant Weight on track for wed-fri, dynamic sunday (pool is 21 degrees!!!) and static on monday (warmer pool).

Like I said - it's a bit crazy, we're not sure whether the plug will get pulled at any point but damn we're having fun and having some great dives!

Cheers,
Ben

Re: Live from Egypt 2006

surely someone knows someone in eurosport they seem to televise minority sports as i have seen base jumping etc on different spots and can,t see it having a bigger audience than freediving but could be wrong. They also televise the sport of poker a lot which i,m sure has a good audience but is it really a sport ?

DeeperBlue SHOULD have a reporter/photographer there! Better to cover the World Championships than the stunts by David Blaine. Dont you think?
