Scubastore Sizing Chart

Usually, we Americans cringe at the European wetsuit cuts. Seems we in the "new world" tend to be a bit more....er....robust than our ancestors.

But, looking at the wetsuit size chart on the diveinn store, my head started to spin. I weigh about 158lbs (72kg), and stand 5'8" (172cm). Pretty "normal" when it comes to average dudes around the world.

So, why does the diveinn store seem to only cater to bowling balls? Am I a size "3" - (5'5" - 135-175lbs !!!!) or a size "4" (5'7" - 155-190lbs)??

What the heck is going on? Did the freediving world suddenly get an influx of portly folks.

If it's bad for me, Connor (cdavis) and Chris (fondueset) don't have a chance in hell of finding a wetsuit that fits from that store. Jon might even be too "thin" to buy one.

If you have experience with Mares/Aqualung suit sizes, please advise.

Ted

Re: Scubastore Sizing Chart

Ted,

I may be able to shine a little light on the matter. You need to have the base understanding that manufacturers' sizing charts are usually not accurate. This is not out of idiocy, but out of a corporate decision to label the wetsuits with sizing parameters that make them most marketable, sadly at the expense of the customer being fit properly. Omer's sizing chart IMHO is not accurate at all and will cause many divers to order a suit that is too small. I helped fondueset and many other with this.

The best thing to do before you buy is to ask other divers or the store owner about a size recommendation based on your height and weight.

..........and on a side note, there is also no true sizing standard by which all the manufacturers abide by. For instance I wear a size 4 in Beuchat, a size 3 jacket and size 2 bottom in Imersion, and a size 5 Omer Dahlak.

Thanks,
Jim

I'm so skinny that almost anything not custom is a waste of time.

Re: Scubastore Sizing Chart

Jon might even be too "thin" to buy one. Thanks buddy.

and stand 5'8" When did you start wearing platform shoes.

I can fit into a standard size Picasso 54 without a problem and my old Cressi suit fit pretty darn well too. My old Esclapez had a nice fitting jacket, but the pants were way too big around.

I prefer custom just because of the severe nature of the water temps we dive in. Having said that, all custom suits are NOT the same- Elios good and Diveskin bad, very bad. I also like custom because I can get them with high waisted pants right away and have nothing to cut off.

Checkout out the Beau chat's- I've heard great things about them.

I don't think it is possible to create a suit that would properly fit you - unless you were able to somehow abandon 3-dimensional space.

That's just your Wisconsin survival genes at work. Connor wouldn't make it from the front door to his car on a Wisconsin, January morning. Parrots would survive longer.

BTW, Jim gave me a hand via PM.

Re: Scubastore Sizing Chart

Skinny has nothing to do with it, common sense tells me to stay out of Wisconsin in January, or anywhere else north of the Mason/Dixon line.
