FRC and Masks

I was just watching Eric's video of his FRC dive at Vertical Blue I think it was. I noticed that he didn't have a mask, a pipe mask or even fluid goggles. I was just wonder, to any FRC divers out there.

Does wearing a mask make that much of a difference to FRC dives? In terms of performance.
Clearly it must make some because otherwise you'd wear one, but how much.

Just asking because I like wearing masks and was gonna do a bit of FRC here and there, just to explore.

Cheers,
Sam.

Re: FRC and Masks

I often use a mask for FRC recreational diving. Sometimes I also use fluid goggles. For deep dives sometimes I use nothing at all.

It just changes the dive reflex a bit. The best dive reflex is with no mask at all, the next best is fluid goggles, and the worst dive reflex is with a mask. However the mask is very comfortable and offers good vision, so I still use it most of the time during fun dives. It is also possible to do deep FRC dives with a mask (I've done 50m FRC w/mask), but the dives are harder to due less dive reflex.

Re: FRC and Masks

Thats exactly what I wanted to know, thank you.
I always dive for fun so looks like a mask it is.
I may have a look at fluid goggles too.

Thanks for your help and good luck with your FRC diving, looks like its going very well.

Cheers,
Sam.
