Fins feel short, need suggestions..

Been diving(spearing) with Cressi 2000's and they are really starting to feel too short. I like the stiffness, but want something 6-8" longer. Any suggestions? I haven't had the chance to try any carbons, might be the ticket..

Thanks, Noah

Hey Noah,

I don't think you'll find too many carbon fins out there that are 6-8" longer than your 2000s. The closest thing would be C4 80s.

If you want truly long blades, check out Gary Fisher Powerblades. They are the longest fins I have ever tried and they work really well. fisherpowerfins.co.nz » ABOUT

Re: Fins feel short, need suggestions..

I'm currently using a pair of Immersion Esclapez, and find them starting to feel the same, "too short". I also plan to purchase a pair of Fisher Power Fins September when I move over to Nelson and can talk to Gary in person.

I've tried swimming with a pair when I did my Freediving course. No Bubbles (Fran Rose) are sponsored by Gary and as a result Fran had a couple of pairs for us students to try.

They're great, really positive feel with your kicks and they're quite efficient too.

So to summarise I concur, get a pair of "Gary's"

Re: Fins feel short, need suggestions..

Noah, I'm currently using a pair of Sporasub Pure Carbons. I have a pair of Fishers but they cracked at the screw holes. I am in the process of cutting off the angled part at the crack and forming them into new blades - they will end up being just slightly longer than the Pures, which shows how long they are in the first place. If you go with the Powerfins, I would epoxy a tab to the back so that you can use the new Omer footpocket system - no screws.

Those sound like what I'm looking for. Why the mods? Does the builder know of the issue and is he trying to fix it?

Also, what stiffness(if he even has that option) would you recommend?

Re: Fins feel short, need suggestions..

I think Gary beefed up that area of the fins and is also using a different resin now. Kolt, I thought Gary would have replaced those fins if they broke..?

Re: Fins feel short, need suggestions..

Noah,

Have you tried Specialfin Hybrids? Carbon/kevlar, designed for spearfishing. Compared to the Cressi's, much much more efficient, about the same stiffness when in Spora pockets, equal or greater acceleration, infinitely better on the surface. Should be perfect for the type of diving you do. I own both.

Re: Fins feel short, need suggestions..

Sorry for the delay Connor, somehow I missed the reply. I have not tried those, actually all I've ever used are Cressi 2000's and 3000's. I'm really feeling the lack of length right now more than anything. Not too concerned with surface performance, as I usually just sub-surface swim back to the boat when I come up downstream. I'm really looking for straight up and down blue water type fins, hopefully with enough backbone to power a stubborn fish up

How long are the SpecialFIns?

I have two pairs of hybrids one medium one stiff, the total length from heel to toe is 35 inches (on my omer 46/48 pockes), the lenght of the tip of the blade to the pair of screws is 24 inches.

I really like the medium stiff the are great for surface swimming, the hard are too hard for me, use them just for up and down dives (these are my impressions in AK where the water is around 50 F), I am 6 feet , 175 lb in AK I dive with 18 lb of lead.

The Hybrids are the same length as the C4/30 but wider.

Re: Fins feel short, need suggestions..

Hi Noah,

You aren't the only one to miss threads, I missed your reply. The Hybrids are exactly the same length as the cressi 2000s, 1/2 inch wider and have infinitely more snap. The difference is pretty amazing. That translates into a whole lot better acceleration to get to a shot fish and much better up/down performance, particularly from deep. I think you would like them a lot if your legs are strong enough. If you get the chance, come on down and pool test'em.

Connor
