HMS Scylla Artifical Reef in Cornwall UK

Most of the uk divers will know of HMS Scylla, its a former navy frigate which was sunk last year in about 27m to form an artifical reef. We dived it a day or too after it was sunk and it really is a great freediver playground. Now a year later its starting to cover with all sorts of life and fish it will be amazing in a few years.

We dived it again last week and although the vis wasnt great the weather was amazing with no wind and hardly any tide.

check the photos on Dan's site
www.underwaterpics.co.uk the link is at the top HMS Syclla.

definetly try and get on it if you are down this way. Its diver friendly but take care in there its easy to get carried away

sorry not much of a story but check the photos and fill in the gaps

Man oh man what a website. The dive on HMS Scylla is fantastic.I've always struggled to describe to people what freediving was like when asked. Now all i have to do is give them a web address.Visiting this site is a must for all people who enjoy all forms of diving.

I'm diving it on Thursday for the second time James - did it a year ago when it was just sunk, can't wait to see what it looks like now!

Re: HMS Scylla Artifical Reef in Cornwall UK

hey sam

its amazing the life on it already although inside its being kept clear by all the heavy scuba traffic but in the crevices and ledges theres all sorts of stuff , urchins on the outside and small wrasse and pollack in there. The top of the bridge is just in the bottom of the kelp zone so theres a bit of weed.

If you freedive it watch out for the scuba divers it can get a bit interesting when they crowd out a room or block an exit point or gang way.

What was really cool was how graceful you are as a freediver compared to the scuba divers, you can just effortlessly glide around whilst they clank and bang about. If you ever had a dream of flying you'll love it.

Think dan shot some good video clips too so i'll ask him to put them up some where.

apparently there has been 30-40 boats there some weekends so mid week is the time.

Was that 27m deep?? In the video it didn't seem to be more than maybe 15-18m? Very cool video though and a interesting wreck.
