Freediving May 13/14

So, no big plans for the weekend, and had some great weather speculated by the weathernetwork, so off I go to do some diving

Saturday:

There are two local lakes I’ve been meaning to dive for some time now and never got around to it. So today, I packed up my hit and headed east, for Eaglet and Hansard lake. Both of these lakes have excellent reputation with the locals for hold many, and very large Burbot, the only edible (legal) species a freshwater Spearo in British Columbia can target. the drive out is a 2 lane blacktop, that winds it's way through the fraiser river valley, alongside the railroad tracks, great fun if you like to drive fast

both lakes were a bust, the ice was off, but turnover must be in full swing as they were stained a dark tea-brown. will have to come back later in the season and see if they clear up. did a big loop (250kms) on the bushroads and did some wildlife viewing (AKA Bear Hunting ), pics are below!

Re: Freediving May 13/14

Sunday:

Being fairly discouraged from Saturday's flop on dive sites I decided to head east again and hit up some favorite river diving sites. the water here is extremely fast and fairly cold (42F). you spend the majority of the dive in arm deep water, on the edge of a dropoff, hand over handing your way around in the current. digging your knees in wherever they will fit to gain purchase. turn your head sideways and your mask becomes a very uncomfortable earmuff. you can get around this by putting your head down as you turn it, for what ever reason this keeps the mask in place. I took a few minutes of vid, if anyone wants to host it, that would be great, I currently cant. both of the sites were good, river was high and water was very clear for this time of year..... some pics below: (the fifth pic is the result of one eager beaver......)

Re: Freediving May 13/14

Nice pictures, took me a while to notice that there was a moose in one of those pictures (I think at least).
If you want to put your videos on the web check out www.video.google.com , its free and takes just a few minutes to get your video on the web. Freediving videos are always fun to watch, even when the water is brown as tea.

Re: Freediving May 13/14

Really, only burbot out there to shoot? What about suckers and pikeminnows (formerly named squawfish)? Are they legal to shoot? They can pretty big as well, and would think that they would be up there. And crayfish, are they in your area, cause those can be pretty tasty

Re: Freediving May 13/14

we are permitted:

Burbot
Carp
Suckers
Squawfish

of those, I'm only keen to eat the burbot. never seen a cray up here, possibly farther south. the Redstar on the map is Prince George, where I call home, a little ways north

Re: Freediving May 13/14

Thanks Morg!

unfortunetly all the video is taken on sides of the river. the deepwater passes I did down the trench in the middle didn't turn out, camera's auto zoom couldn't keep up. that's where the fish are. this was my first go at filming in one of these streams. very difficult to rn a cam and hold on, so moved to slower water to free up a hand. Discovered an entire track (track, rollers, and all) from a skidsteer sitting in the middle of the channel. will go back when the water's lower (and clearer) and get some pics. wonder how that got there.........
