Re: Freediving on YouTube

This video is not strictly freediving but it was shot at the AIDA World Team Championship 2004 and features the Mens Silver medal team.

It's not pretty but it is fairly funny.

Re: Freediving on YouTube

Whaha, that brings back memories... I saw that one live! It also brings back memories about the great deeperblue HQ after after party at the dorms, where deepest bear was sacrificed, put on fire, thrown down from the 17th floor, where the police busted the place, where there were around 50 people piled up in one big orgy of alcohol and sweety freedivers... The good old times...

Stephan, when and where is the next DB party being held? Sign me up!

Come to DEMA and find out

Great memories of Vancouver. The infamous after party with Kirk and Kaz wrestling outside. The even more infamous DB after-after party which was by far one of the funniest, scariest and downright craziest parties i've ever been to. To this day I still get the odd flash back and boy do I laugh.

I kind of dislike the way this video is cut. First we see a constant descent but when she reaches the bottom plate she is coming dow variable and is wearing a diferent suit. Then this playing around, going in and out... and then we are back at the original dive (maybe?) and see the other suit... makes me wonder what was going on there at all...

Excuse the quality but this is the first time filming in the ocean for me. These fish are Kahawai. Filmed only about 50 metres off shore.

Here's another one, from triple depth '07

I don't think it can compete with the milk challenge though...

It's a bit of a pity about Molchanova's arch dive, could have been great with some different editing.

Re: Freediving on YouTube

Very nice dive, Mullins . Your technique seems to be one of the best I have seen in this discipline. But you are diving without a mask (and get a stronger DR i beleive). How do you manage (I guess you keep your eyes closed during the hole dive)? How is it to perform a cw dive without seeing anything at all? Do you do the same also in cold water (below 10 celsius)?

It would also be very interesting if you could share with the forum what happened in your announced 115 m dive in Sharm.

Re: Freediving on YouTube

I have my eyes open for most of the dive, except for the glide. I can see all I need to see – the line and markings, the base plate, the safety divers. The only thing that’s tricky is when they put white tags on a white or clear baseplate… I could see the black velcro tags though. I can handle about 14 degrees before I need to either keep them closed or wear a mask.

With no CW training since June I had 3 weeks in Egypt to practice the mouthfill and only managed to get past 100m in the last few days before the competition. I did a very easy 106m dive, but had to bail out of my final training dive to 115m after I encountered equalising problems again. I thought I could sort it out for the competition as the stress tends to make me more focused, but nominating 8m more than my PB was always going to be a gamble.

The dive itself was pretty uncomfortable due to the pressure of the competition, but at 114m I felt I could still afford to lose several metres’ worth of performance to stress and come up clean. I came very close to getting the equalising right, but I just couldn’t make that final equalisation and after riding my ears a few metres I had to turn at 110. According to my watches I spent 9 seconds there trying to find some volume to play with but it wasn’t happening, and I’m pretty sure I would have done some real damage if I’d gone the extra 4m. Ruptured eardrums at 114m is no fun…

I was seriously pissed off with myself afterwards, as I was there to win and I’d put a fair bit of time and money into the competition (as everybody does). On reflection though, considering it was a PB and that Herbert is a pretty decent sort of competitor to come second to… silver wasn’t such a bad result.

Re: Freediving on YouTube

Yeah, thanks for shearing, Mullins. Silver and 110 is very, very good. And after spending 9 seconds down there trying to find air to equalize...! Very impressing if you ask me.

Just one other thing. Does it take a long time to get used to salt water in your eyes? Is it a matter of practise? It hurts pretty much when I get seawater in my eyes when its salt like The Red Sea.

Greatful Norwegian.
