Re: training alone (on land!)

You surely are NOT!!! I do it too. Dream of tropical fish, and dream of Freediving to awake still holding my breath. I have dreamed I was at World's in Vancouver--and did an 8:37 in Static. Funny. The entire Comp was dry. And Static was all they could have--LOL!
I have to have a vivid imagination. I'm limited to the YMCA swimming pool for diving, and I bout dive. That's very brief periods underwater. I need to do it that way, because I don't have a buddy. I'm finding that while the thrill seeker who wants big Numbers can't have her way, the other side of me that wants a nice, relaxing dive session can. I don't need to break one minute under the surface to satisfy her.

Re: training alone (on land!)

I'm tickled to find other WOMEN! Most of my Freedive Netpals are Men. Nothing against the male gender, mind you, I was married to one of the finest men I ever knew--for 18 years. I'm a new widow. It feels good to get my mind off my pain for awhile and just talk about dreamin' about tropical fish and doin' 8:37 in Static at World's and silly fun stuff. I've never actually competed beyond the Church Camp underwater swim and the high school swim team and the Camp Okobojii Polar Bear Challenge (I made that a Freedive Event) and the YMCA Cross-Country Challenge. Only some of this is Freediving, and I'm not really that competitive by nature. Or that good at it. I just like a thrill once in a while (why I dreamed of the 8:37). Or a smooth and relaxing experience. I have lots more of the latter--and it suits me well. Too many thrills would be too stimulating. I like relaxation. I do Yoga.
You are MOST welcome to continue THIS discussion, Abbi.

Re: training alone (on land!)

I would advise you to keep your solitary diving-related activities strictly OUT-OF-WATER. Diving without a buddy is always a bad idea if you're planning on pushing your limits. Out of water there is nothing wrong with practicing breath-holds, but pay attention to yourself and make sure you don't over do it. Any headaches or dizziness is a sign that you should stop for awhile. Make sure you do some breath-up excercises in between- and the breath-ups should take up the majority of the exercise.

Re: training alone (on land!)

Hmm. I'll try that. Very soon (Starting later this month) I'll be relegated to land except on weekends (and then usually just Saturdays) by my schedule. Mine and the YMCA's.
It's been a long time since I did it regularly on land. Will take some getting used to. But doing it regularly in H20 required an adjustment also.
I hate stopwatches, but I'll adjust.
It's that or quit. How does a dolphin quit being a dolphin???
