I'd guess it's part of the gag response, as well as sneezing. Seems like gasping is a different sensation. Milicic: Nasal Fontanel Receptors CONCLUSION: There is a reflex communication between the nasal fontanel receptors and lungs, which is regulating the tracheobronchial vagal tone and resistance in lung airways.
