What we most often investigate are searches for evidence (weapons, bodies, etc...) tossed into water to avoid detection during an investigation. Sometimes, we are called in to do searches for supposed drown/accident victims...when things just don't add up. Cold cases, environmental investigations, and yes...dive accidents. UCSI combines the scientific method behind land-based forensic investigations with the unique requirements one encounters in the alien environment of "underwater." The majority of water-related crimes do not originate in the water, but on land. Therefore, it is important to not only understand how different things react when submerged...but also be aware of currents, tides, weather conditions, and all other marine-environmental issues. Whether as mundane as using side scan sonar to map the ocean floor (I only say "mundane" because it can be quite boring watching a computer monitor for hours on end whilst dragging a towfish), or as exciting as clawing through vegetation at the bottom of a swamp...UCSI is definitely a newly-emerging and exciting field. I don't necessarily think this the forum for this particular discussion...but I'm glad you asked. We've not yet been called in to investigate a freediving accident (those types of accidents--when body recovery is not the issue--are usually investigated based on water conditions and witness statements, and of course autopsy).

No, and we women also don't run around in stilettos with cute little lab kits, speaking in catty witticisms (all the while with perfectly coiffed hair). The attached photo is from an investigation in a boggy runoff from Lake Seminole...and this is more how "we roll." Not real sexy, huh?
Sorry this thread has become a bit off-topic. I hope we don't get in trouble with the thread police! ![]()

Well, that is kinda sexy. Maybe it isn't for the intended audience of CSI, but You're among Your people here. We like that kind of stuff.

I'm a navy diver/avid spearo/beach bum. Body jobs are well a part of the job and well its not like we do then often but every once in awhile when a plane falls out of the sky or a bridge collapses they give us a call and they are not fun. I do have a question for you though. Do u always wear an aga mask? Not to add to the already difficult job that you have but contamination is a big concern for us when dealing with dead bodies (whatever the case maybe) in the warm water of florida/georgia (lake seminole?). just curious? No need to worry but it is something to consider. And you look surprisingly young to be a in the market for a PhD. Last edited by unobreath; March 19th, 2008 at 06:26. |

How in the world could you tell I was wearing an AGA? That's really funny. It WOULD take another working diver to notice that just from the pic (where it's pushed up onto the top of my head). And no, we don't always wear them. If there is a hazmat situation (and body recovery isn't, surprisingly, considered to be a hazmat), we suit up a lot more (e.g. drysuits). We were wearing AGA on this investigation for the in-water comms...we couldn't see our dive buddies, but we could speak to them. Thanks for the compliment, by the way. I've not started work on the PhD yet, still plugging away at my assistantship and thesis. Freediving kind of took over my life...PhD will probably begin in the autumn. As long as I can keep finding ways of incorporating freediving into my research, I'll be fine! By the way, have you been to the NEDU in Panama City? We may know some of the same people!

I've been there a few times. I know a few people. We more than likely know the same people since there really isnt to many of us. Im kinda in the same boat as you with freediving. It has taken over my life. I was big into it when I was in college but now that I'm a little older (haha) I can appreciate it more and well needless to say it is all I want to do. I'm kinda lucky because I get to travel to a lot of cool places and well get paid to dive there. The freediving and spearfishing is just a bonus. I am guessing you work around northern florida southern georgia eastern alabama area. The cave systems over that way are pretty cool. vortex springs and genie(sp?) springs. Any ways its good to see another working diver who enjoys the finer things in life like freediving as well as I do. Take care. Last edited by unobreath; March 19th, 2008 at 06:27. |

Many freedivers do it, to avoid building of overpressure in sinuses during the ascent. Some are able releasing the pressure easily voluntarily, others find removing the nose clip simpler.

Thnx Trux...
Can you have any idea.. when a diver remove nose clip.. he/she let the sea water fill into sinuses or how he/she do not let to enter i mean by using epiglotis muscle??? think that depth is -80m ????
