I am re-entering diving and will begin by freediving freshwater near my home in Stockton, primarily from a fishing kayak (Hobie Adventure). Later when skills, confidence, and conditioning warrant I will hit the saltwater. I plan to spearfish and harvest abalone and spiny lobster. From time to time I am in the Los Angeles area and intend to fish and dive in that area as well.
I am looking for ideas for places to freshwater freedive and, if it is legal, spearfish. Suggestions? Thanks.

I think you can only spear carp in lakes and other bodies of freshwater. Well, maybe you can target scawfish and other "trash" fish, but you can't target "game" fish like bass, crappie, catfish, salmon, stripers, sturgeon...etc.
Diving in lakes is limited to the summer and fall months. Once the rains come the lakes and rivers turn into big brown dirty bodies of water. |

Pick up a copy of the Freshwater Fishing regulations. They explain in detail what's allowed in your area. You can pick 'em up for free at local sporting goods stores

Thanks, BatRay. Have picked up the regs for both fresh and saltwater. Any plain English translations available?

Fresh Water spearfishing has piqued my interest. I did not know you could do that. StocktonDon, Have you tried it yet? I assume you will be doing that in the Delta (I am in Santa Rosa myself).
