I am new to the world of free diving and am trying to find out the dangers involved, and have not been able to find any literature about the possible adverse effects on your musles and brain. Either due to the reduction in oxygen levels, the sudden increase in oxygen when you take the breath at the end of a period of apnea, or increases in CO2 levels.
I have heard from a medical student, that there will be a build up of free radicals which are oxygen carrying particles, these particles can damage your brain and muscle tissue, including your heart. Does anyone have any links to suggest that will clear this up for me.

Few people survive life so I wouldn't get too upset about a few extra "free radicals". Eating plenty of fruit and veges and drinking tea can help reduce the amount in your body..
Apnea helps train your muscles to be more effecient but also increases your red blood cell count. I recall Eric saying something about the blood thickening Just ask Mr Fattah nicely and Im sure he'll be happy to share his vast knowledge on apena and physiology. Or have a look at some of his posts in this forum, plenty of info in them, use the search engine to find them. |

i'm rather new to freediving myself but one definite danger i have found out so far is that a relationship is increasingly endangered the more time you spend in the water. currently i live and dive at the red sea. every day. so there you go....it is not easy, i tell you.
