cold water near drowning

hey db'ers! it's been a long time, but i'm back. new job, new location, and a new computer that has me back on-line. anyway, i've been looking for some info on the physiology of cold water near drownings, particularly in children- situations where kids have been submerged for long periods of time and been resuscitated. haven't really found much other than first responder-type procedures. can anyone out there help me on this one?

I have book called 'the brain without oxygen' which talks of a case of a kid who survived 40 minutes under cold water without brain damage.

But, Page 488: para 1: "the diving reflex is probably not operative in humans" is a strange comment, since they then discusss evidence to the contrary!
