Re: Freediving vs Auto-Asphyxiation

Why Free dive?

To spearfish. Mainly. But it' great to leave the gun on the boat and just be free.

Also, when I bring home those lovely hard to shoot treats, cuddle fish, soldier fish, fat unicorn fish etc.,

I get really nice bed time treats.

Re: Freediving vs Auto-Asphyxiation

Some people think that freediving is only about pain and fighting the urge to breathe. In fact it is possible to stay within comfortable limits and not suffer at all.

I don't think I am a masochist, though some things (getting into cold pools in winter, doing CO2 tables) make this questionable.

For me, the more important part of freediving is the satisfaction of doing what I aim for, and to try open water recreational diving one day.

Re: Freediving vs Auto-Asphyxiation

I just like being underwater.

I don't mind tanks - but it's a little like taking your cell phone along on vacation.

Ooooookaaay - we've got hypoxyphilia, slippery substances, pearls, restrictive clothing, a distinctive jargon, altered states..... now, it's been many years since I was a student, but the first word that comes to mind is FETISH!!

No, wait, I'm sorry. That's not it at all. I mean ' et fish '. Mmmmmm....... f i s h .. . . .

Re: Freediving vs Auto-Asphyxiation

Im not allowed to scuba dive anymore but apart from spearing, its just an easy way of getting in the water and having some fun, I suppose that the fishing is just an excuse to get in the water. What I do like is going on my own, I just love the solitude (not a recomendation before I get flamed )

Re: Freediving vs Auto-Asphyxiation

Funny you should mention it.

As I was wriggling sinuously into my wetsuit the other day, an elderly couple happened by. The lady said 'well, I guess we know where he's going'. To which I replied 'nah, it's just a fetish'.

Re: Freediving vs Auto-Asphyxiation

Cuddle fish? It's a big carp that wants a big hug.

http://hometown.aol.com/_ht_a/kmam1/...tGoldfish.html

Maybe I'm just being hopelessly naive about the whole freediving thing, and I have in fact joined a fetish club. Everyone else is just too embarrassed to explain things to the hapless innocent in their midst.

Oh come on - the intros to all those old Bond films, Fantastic Voyage (oh to be one of those 'antibodies' on Raquel Welch's suit LOL!) etc.

Re: Freediving vs Auto-Asphyxiation

The cuddle fish here are about the same size of a medium squid (10in total 5 for body 5 for tentacles). Looks like a squid but the wings "if you want to call them that" stretch from the head all the way to the back. Usually travel in groups of 10 or 12, super fast and hard to get with a speargun. Beautiful eyes with a neon blue eyeshadow.
My wife cleans em and we eat sashimi style (soy and wasabi)
The cuddle part comes later. ; )
