Hi, i was wondering what you guys think about listening to music while freediving.
Personaly I have gotten some results, you see normaly my contractions start at around 2:00. yesterday with the right music I postponed them to a little under 3:30. I havent had time to do a max, and I havent done any training in the past 4 months (except this week) so I have to work on it again. when i mean listening to music I mean a particular song. Those of you who know a bit about the meta model/ nlp/ general psychology you will understand the term "classical referencing". Songs can be a very powerful anchor for this. I have had moderate success evoking the mamilian dive reflex through a few songs, but seeing as I havent done any deep diving in a while (and I dont have the right MP3 player) I havent been able to evoke it fully, but it would prove a great advantage i believe. only problem is that for static there arent many songs long enough If your wondering what is the right MP3 player, check out the new players by H20 Audio (it doesnt come with the player, just the waterproof case). There are 2 models (same price, $199.99) one goes to 200 feet, the other to 300. any thoughts? |

I haven't used it for static yet, since I have no one to spot me, but I did get one of those cases to swim in the pool with.
I bought the 10' rated case for $49, which must be on some kind of sale through Iriver america. It makes long swims SO much easier that I no longer get bored counting the tiles on the bottom of the pool. It has changed my whole workout- for the better. yes I agree, when I have nothing to occupy my mind I start to focus on the urge to breath. when listening to music, the more I need to breath, the more "passionatly" I sing the song in my head. Great for taking my mind off my urge to breath.
I am going to get the model restant to 300 ft. by H2O Audio. have you had any results at evoking the dive reflex via the song(s)? Also I bet this is the first post/ reply written on a PSP

I just got a waterproof MP3 player from Oregon Scientific. I have only used it once, and am still trying to figure out the best music for training. I haven't had enough time to get a good feeling for whehether its worth the extra effort in messing with earbuds to get them to stay in and...

The ones from Oregon Scientific use waterproof earpieces, but at depth it can damage your ears severely. the Swimp3 and the H2O audio mp3 players use bone conduction to deliver sound to your ears. at 10 feet the Swimp3 can simply no longer send sound, but the H2O audio ones have amplfiers which will let them work at about 300 feet (itll play past that depth, but it might implode)
personaly i want the H2O audio ones, rather then constantly switching you can just choose one, and on both the swimp3 and H2O audio will not fall off very easily.

For the ones who use music in statics may I suggest moby, he has made some incredibly relaxing songs!

for me it isnt neccessarily about relaxing. sometimes when my contractions get strong i need a powerful chorus to come on, that i can mentaly sing. having an emotional tie with the song also makes me feel it more, taking my attention even farther from my situation.

sounds good. i have beaten my PB many times with Sandstorm (by Darude) on. it helps me visualize myself swimming into a wreck or something, very motivating.

its fairly personal in terms of what songs.
for example with sandstorm, the muic starts to drop at about 1:30, at which point i say "wow i still dont feel like i need air" (usualy i would at this point) which gives me the confidence to keep going. the hardest part of my breath hold is generaly 2:15 to 2:45 when the urge rises, after which i get a bit used to it. in just that part the music is very strong. so once what works for you varies when you get contractions, your mental "tough spots" and whether your using hte acid method or the basic method. look through some songs that you have already associated to freediving (for example song that you may have listened to alot when on DB that remind you of freediving) by the way, until you get an underwater mp3 player dont use a single song much, it happens to dissassociate from freediving and more to boredom, and doesnt help. whichever song your using listen to when actualy swimming and only use it for dry statics occassionaly. good luck, Matt

I bought an iRiver with the swimming housing and it is great for static and trainning on the pool. I donŽt think iŽll use it on the sea, could be to tough for it.
But music while swimming is great against boring. In static helps with concentration. Try Jacques Loussier playing Bach!!!! Sigi... |

hmmm video. i hear theyve got a psp waterproof case cookin, man i want to watch videos while doing apnea/ tv makes you use the least brain power of any activity, so it should get mind off apnea (and anything else, LOL). playing games underwater should hae the same "sucking my attention in" effect.
