Wow! It had to be a pretty shock for the camera operator!
BTW, are you sure it was indeed 3000m and not 3000 feet? 1000m (~3000ft) is the usual hunting depth of sperm whales, but 3000m would be probably the deepest ever recorded sperm whale dive. Read more about sperm whale depth records on this page. . |

I can't say for sure if it was 2955ft or 2955m, but I do know that sperm whales have been recorded diving to at least 3200m. The so-called depth records are updated several times per year, and it may even be deeper now.
Depth records I'm aware of: Harbour Seal 420m Emperor Penguin 565m Elephant Seal 2000m Sperm Whale 3200m Sea Otter 97m The Elephant seal and Emperor Penguin have the most impressive depths if you consider the size of the animal vs. depth it dives.

I am pretty sure it's 3000m but will check back with the guy who filmed it. (In his initial mail he clearly said meters).
Some initial checking shows that there are some ultra deep oil fields in Macae and recently a company delivered a new valve to operate at depths to maximum 3000 meters to Petrobras and on GasNet i found that that area has fields up to 3.400 meters deep (http://216.109.124.98/search/cache?p...icp=1&.intl=br) But to be absolutely sure I wrote the guy at Petrobras. If you look at the depth reading on the video as it shifts you can see that it's expressed in decimal points per hundred (to the right of the period) and not in inches (per 12), more probably meters than feet then.

Either way, what a wonderful image. I'm sure the camera operator would have felt quite blessed... once he mopped his pants up

Amazing video !!
I love its style, slow and relaxed; like me, but shallower. ![]()

That is an awesome video. Remember though, AIDA wasn't present so it can only be considered a training dive, despite the precision depth gauges and video footage. It might have had difficulty with the surface protocol too...

So, would you consider it as an unassisted dive? it did have fins... but no equipment. *befuddled*
Q: Why did the sperm whale dive to 3000m? A: Because it could. |

Problem there:
No hand to give the OK sign No vocal cord to give a clear "I am OK" Also he / she was not using a Lanyard. But just to be sure we could do the doping test in case it's a new world record. |
