Hi, I live in Phuket, Thailand. I am a scuba instructor and have been freediving solo for a while. Now that I know how dangerous it is, I have stopped because I can't find a buddy. I want to attend a clinic to work on my technique. Are there any in Asia? What's the closest if not? Can you give me some links? Thanks a Bunch....

Hi Thaidiver,
I have the same problem. Just started freediivng but not seem to be able ot find many pple in Asia. I live in Singapore but dive all around Asia quite often - Bali, Thailand, Malaysia every month. I'm going to Koh Tao next month to do the freediving course w Apnea Total. Are you still living in Phuket? Cheers, Ad |

freediving clinic and competition coming next year ,wish i could be there ! (hope there will be a Thai national record ,untill now not many locals freedive )
Freedive in Thailand february 2008 The freediving scene is growing in South east Asia ! thailand and malaysia have very nice conditions with 29 celcius water. The only bad side of perhentian,Tioman and Thailand is that it' s not deep enough (Deepest point of the gulf of Thailand is 90m ,halfway to cambodia ) But these places are perfect to learn freediving ,40m is more than enough for courses,if not for competitions ; See also: Apnea Total and Freediving / Apnea in Koh Lanta - Krabi - Thailand |

Hi,
I'll be passing by Phuket next week. Won't probably have time to do a full course, but I could certainly show you some pointers and the basic safety stuff. Plus I could use a buddy Sent you a pm... -edit- Blah, just noticed that the original message was like 3 years old. Well, my offer still stands

The first week phuket (1-2 days), Racha Yai (rest of the week). After that, we haven't really planned yet. Either hop around the islands, fly to Bali, Vietnam or Malaysa maybe...Something like that. The only thing I've reserved so far is the flights to Bangkok

Sorry for the unsolicited advice, but Phuket sucks for freediving. You'll probably go out with the scuba divers' boats to places like Shark Point, Flowers Island (don't remember the thai name), Racha Yai... like 20m depth and not good vis.
If you can afford it (and it actually does not cost too much when you consider that it includes lodging and food) it is worthy in my opinion to do a live-aboard to the Similan islands, there you can easily find 30m-40m and better visibility. |
