"Amphibious" (Hi Jim): with that fantastic laugh you just gave me I think I am going actually try and get some work done today. If only I drank I would join you.

Re: Insults and abuse

the culture/language barriers being referred to here remind of a story i was telling someone about the other day, when i was training as a divemastr i used to assist in open water courses, quite often i would tell a lady in the course who was constantly siking in the pool 'youre overweighed', which they would hear 'youre overwieght' and we allkknow the reaction to that one, but in the edn when i explain, we have a laugh and all is ok, so yes a dual responsibility on the talker and the listner

Re: Insults and abuse

Hey, you persons. Remember Spaghetti is an Italian creature and they invented things we take for granted in our modern world. Shiney shoes and Hair design, for example. Also; the seventies, underwater things, air travel, small animals, cappucino and bright yellow cars. We may never understand their mysterious ways but we must respect them or they might stop selling us masks and racing watches.
Also - Jim lives in Florida where he must daily face incomprensible things like insects the size of small children and nauseatingly hot water. I'm also not entirely sure he has a neck.

Thank you, Chris, you showed up to be a true friend. But you forgot the most important legacy of the Great Pizzaland Civilization:
1) The pizza cutter wheel:

2) The pizza cutter wheel for bikers:

PS- To be honest, the seventies started in former Yugoslavia.

Multiple :!! I can't keep up with this so I'm resigning my attitude of thought police and going back to mentoring the Food and Aging Forum where it's safe. Actually, I don't remember the seventies too well on account of the sixties!

Re: Insults and abuse

Well first off beeing a real man and all : ) Im just can't see myself beeing offended by anything written on the internet or media in general. Unless it's absolutely personal with my name on it.

Im just trying to understand the person who reads something, and is not able to say to him/herself "well that guys just a jerk it doesnt concern me it just his ignorant opinion" And then sits in front of the screen feeling attacked. Please get a life! : )

I think that's not really the problem - nobody really gets any offense too seriously on the forum, even if it is in a direct and personal reply to his/her own post. It is not the kind of offense that would force you to commit sopoku or start drinking. But unnecessarily aggressive, violent or impolite posts discourage others from participating in the discussion, and will also discourage most of readers from following it. Active, polite, intelligent and reasonably argumenting members might be bullied out by just couple of arrogant jerks (fortunately I never saw one on this forum).

BTW, attaching the note "Please get a life" is already quite negative and there is an apparent intention to offend the adversary, so personally I would usually try avoiding to use it. Not that anyone gets offended, but I think that everyone has the right to express his opinion and there is no need to shut him down. If you do not agree, feel free to express you own opinion, but try avoiding unnecessary agressivity.

Re: Insults and abuse

Well you got a point there. Im a welder an work with some tuff dudes on the workplace. And comunication is very much based on agression, and standing up for yourself.

I can actually see how my "please get a life : )" could discourage someone from posting in fear off beeing hit with some nasty reply in my next post. The problem is that the person don't know me and my tone and humor, or lack off.

I think I get it now, thanks for explaning.

Yes, that's exactly it. Body language does not travel well through the wire. Myself, when speaking with old good friends, I enjoy quite a lot speech that would be valued as extremely offending and vulgar, but it is in fact a kind of appreciation of the friends and intimity with them. However, I am well aware that it does not work so well with others - strangers, most of colleagues, neighbours, my wife, ... so I know I have to differentiate, and of course I know that it would not be appreciated on any online forum too .
