Re: Insults and abuse

Solid support for the mentors on this one. DB is a very very unusual place. I haven't found any other site where it is possible to debate any serious topic without being ever being flamed, etc. I value the attitude of this place more than I can express, recognize my own difficulty with getting the point accross without being, even unintentially, insulting, and haven't felt in the least inhibited about discussing anything that merited discussion. However that attitude came to be, the mentors have a lot to do with keeping it that way.

Thanks!

And then there are Jimdoe, Fondueset, and lots more. Thanks to all for irrererent hilariaty.

Re: Insults and abuse

I haven't found any other site as good as DB. Almost all other forums are either too small and rarely used to be of value, or they are full of spam, pointless flaming and useless or dangerous advice. Thankyou everyone, including mentors, admins and most members, for keeping it that way.

Spammers are banned outright, but actual members' cases are reviewed among the team before almost any infraction or warning is given, and certainly before a banning.
I understand that banning someone is a drastic move. I also don't mind the occasional argument, as long as it doesn't become bitter and pointless. Fortunately most problem members stop posting after a few weeks, or become more polite after a few warnings.

Well...no, not really. Murder specifically deals with killing humans, not eating meat: murder - Definitions from Dictionary.com As well as being inaccurate & potentially insulting, in the UK calling somebody a murderer who is not could lead to prosecution for slander, if spoken, or libel if written. Often these are dealt with as private prosecutions for damages ($$$). Perhaps we can blame the McCartney's for wearing T-shirts that say "Meat is Murder" -- which just makes me think "no it's not, that's being silly".

Good point -- I enjoy the wide readership of the forum.

I'm with Jim Doe on the whole America-Japan border issue though. But Jim, Spaghetti is Italian -- they speak Latin, like in Latin America, not Spanish (like in Portugal).

Smile Re: Insults and abuse

These last few posts are a blatant reminder that humor and irreverence are a calming influence provided by the many great members on Deeperblue.

In my experience arguments on this site are conducted in a generally civil manner, and anyone who is off the mark is soon ignored and goes away.
Argument is very healthy if conducted in the right way. There should be no attempt to score ego points. Just rational debate.

Friendly light hearted banter is to be expected, but personal attacks are a different story.

I find this site hugely informative and inspirational. I will try to play my part in making it continue in it's excellence.

Sounds like a cover up for something. And exactly at what temperature in the water do you become macho?

Obviously - you're a spearfisherman (& network admin). It's probably the safest course of action -- they'd only want their wicked way with you & then where would you be!

Well, it's clear that he's afraid of his wife!

I'm just here for da chicks

No other place where he can pick up da chicks

I avoid confrontations with other humans on the premise that the universe is already punishing them sufficiently.

Very negative view on life: he feels so insecure that everyday interaction with people is terrifying, and that obviously it must be the same for everyone else, hence he doesn't want to inflict any more pain - at least he has compassion.

heh heh heh --- evil grin...!

Re: Insults and abuse

Wow, this is some funny stuff!! It is interesting that this thread has gotten so much action so quickly. One thing I have come to appreciate are the set of unique sense of hurmors, or senses of of humor or is it senses of humorseses (Dang those plurals), of folks from around the world. This is one of the things that gives DB a permanant place on my tool bar.
I have not been around that long, nor do I prowl all of the forums, but I don't think I have seen more than one post in the past year or so that I would consider truly rude and personally offensive. Maybe I just have a thick skin, though, being a card carrying union member power plant operator.... Our management calls us "knuckle draggers"... I am pretty sure that is a term of endearment.

Re: Insults and abuse

If you look at Adrian's last post it's pretty clear he thinks of punishment as something negative!

It's important to respect the ideas and values of weird, alien, europeanish cultures.
You gotta remember these people were raised with stuff like croissants and humiliating little coffee cups that nobody can drink from without looking silly.
Plus they got a lot of old buildings and statues and cheese and weird little cars and art and shit like that. Its made em all sensitive, so they like burst into song at the sight of a flock of swallows or start sobbing uncontrollably when they see some kid with a balloon.

I really have to hand it to em for keeping it together as good as they do, what with what passes for normal over there.
