A London paper this morning had a short article on it and said that they were breathing "pure oxygen".
It's a shame shite like that gets into the world media more than real performances like Stig's and Herbert's world records, which actually take a bit of skill. Hell give me a bottle of O2 and i'll show you a world record... Cheers, Ben

Well, it indeed was a record. Not AIDA, but Guinness. The previous Guinness record in that discipline was set several times by Tom Sietas - the last one was set last year during a TV show in the French TF1, and it was I believe 15:02. Unlike the Lithuanians, Tom surfaced perfectly clean though and could probably do much more. And yes, as written above, unofficially there were even longer breath-holds with O2. The problem at O2 apnea is high CO2 level that can reach toxic levels before the hypoxia hits.
There are three links with Tom doing O2 records in my Media Base. Tom took two of them off the web in the meantime, and the last from France wasn't online at all: Sietas O2 @ APNEA.cz |

Trux: you are wrong.
It was NOT a guiness or any other official record. It was a TV show, with some scenes recorded few days ago. There was not a single official person from Guiness or "Factum" agency (official Lithuanian records agency ). Still, after the stunt, they could require to aproove their record , yet they did not. Although it was "live", but both siblings faces in blue squares, making strange mimics (people should believe they were low on o2) were simply inserted when needed. This frame was B&W also It was stated they were breathing pure o2 for 40 seconds. 40 seconds?? Underwater cameras were muliage. Not a single frame was shown live, in color, underneath the participants. I was told they had transparent tubes, and simply breathed using them. (information from inside the TV company) The "safety divers" were already seen on that TV before. They are known to have commercial interest with the TV show organizers, to advertise their scuba diving club. Some people did record the attempt on video, and later analized it. There's some TV spoilage also. The woman's hair is different from different camera views, you can see someone's hands above her head in slow motion. Both of them were evacuated in a bad condition. At least to my knowledge, even after a BO, you should get up quite soon. Toxic levels you say? Everyone, who has at least minimum knowledge what the freediving is, and how statics looks like, could see it was a fake. It's the same story, when they did a "world record, staying in ice for .. hours". I am telling all this, cause i feel angry when it is stated "organizers say, the participants made a new world record!". I wouldn't mind if they would simply say "Magicians will show a breatholding stunt!!!". That would be true. I believe, these statements do a lot of damage to our sport. |
