Protecting the Sharks

Hi everyone,

I stumbled across this site the other day and wanted to pass it along.

There has been a lot of talk about saving the dolphins lately which I agree with completely, but there is another ocean creature that is just as vital to the ocean community that is silently being exterminated at alarming rates.

SHARKS!

They may not be cute and cuddly like dolphins and most of you spearos would not want to come in contact with one while trying to string a fish. And some of you deep guys/girls would not want to see one just before a target dive.

But,

These amazingly majestic creatures are very important animals in the ocean ecosystem. They are apex preditors and keep animal populations in check. Without them the whole ocean ecosystem goes awry.

Unlike the dolphin harvest that utilizes most of the meat that comes from those poor animals the sharks are mainly fished just for the fins. They are pulled onboard ships, stripped of their fins and thrown back into the water, many time still alive to then die a slow agonizing death.

Please take the time to fill out the form and help stop the killing.

DSV,
To sign up for this in your link is not for everyone, only US citizens.

But it is a very important cause for two reasons: the ecological you mention but also for animal rights. The ecological is obvious and concerns all of us in a very deep way. But the sharks are also treated in a very brutal way. The fishermen catch them with longlines several kilometers long, and the sharks (and other creatures such as turtles, seals, birds etc) can hang at the hooks for a very long time. If the sharks are still alive when the fishermen get them on board, they cut their fins off and throw them over board again without killing them. They are left helpless in the ocean not able to swim!

i managed to register, putting Other as a state and a fake postal code (Dubai doesnt have postal codes).

Imagine cutting a fisherman's arms off and throwing him to the sharks so he cant swim (sorry, rude thought i know)
