I Love Freediving

Okay, so maybe this is stating the obvious, given the board we are on right now. But I had abdominal surgery in December, and have not dove since November '07. We tried to do some dives in Ft. Lauderdale this month, but the seas were too rough for the boat captains' tastes. Anyway, my husband and I went out to Vortex Spring, FL. We suited up, got right in, and it all came back to me. The HUGE carp would swim right up to us, whilst staying really far away from the scuba divers. Vortex has a wonderful cavern and cave system (I've dove it in my technical gear), but for freediving we just swim down a line to the entrance to one of the systems...no overhead freediving for us, thank you very much. The bottom of the line hits about 45', so it's not much of a challenge. However, being in the water, checking out the scuba divers doing their check-out dives, hanging out with the ornamental koi, big black carps, and occasional brown American eel was phenomenal. I hope there is never another time in my life when I have stay out of the water for such a long period of time. I LOVE FREEDIVING! The peace, the challenge, the freakin' calm (internal and external)...it's all so very wonderful. If it weren't for the FIT class I took last September, I never would have discovered this. Since then, I've become a bit of a gear junkie...and even gotten tattooed with a freediver on one of my legs.
I just wanted to write this (long, sorry) piece on here because I think it is easy to forget our passions when we are unable to pursue them. This weekend was just the ticket to bring my obsession back to the surface (no pun intended). When I put my technical diving gear back on in a couple of weeks, it's gonna suck. But knowing we have weekends to explore without all that cumbersome gear--as well as near-future trips back to Ft. Lauderdale to dive with the FIT peeps...well, that makes everything else just dandy.
Cheers,
Billie

It's always great to hear someone declaring their passion. Great to see you still have so much enthusiasm after such a long hiatus from diving. Cheers!

Billie,
I'm glad you and Todd got to get out and have some fun. Chris Harris and I did some freediving today as well. It felt great after a two week long hiatus. I've enclosed some pictures That Chris took of us on a recent dive. I hope this makes you guys jealous of blue water and you get your butts back down here quickly. See Y'all soon

Thanks, Tony. Mission accomplished. Those pics were so great that Todd and I are definitely counting the days until the May practice sessions.
Love ya,
Billie

Re: I Love Freediving

Billie, that’s cool that you and Todd are so into freediving. I’d love to get my wife more into freediving but she is still emotionally recovering from the last time I took her out freediving on the kayak and we got caught in a really violent thunderstorm . The rain was so thick that we lost sight of land and the rain was pelting our eyes. She was not a happy camper. About 10 minutes before the storm hit us I told her not to worry... I do this kind of stuff all the time and that storm is not going to hit us....

Here are a couple more pictures from that recent dive that Tony mentioned. We were diving a pretty cool tugboat wreck. We ended up cruising the wreck on the scooters because of the lack of fish. Any chance you guys will be here on the Saturday before the practice session? If so maybe we can get out on a recreational dive too.
-Chris

Re: I Love Freediving

Lets plan that day. If the seas cooperate, We will all pile on my boat, and hit a couple of wrecks. Billie and Todd, MARK IT ON YOUR CALENDAR!!! We will have tons of fun.

Re: I Love Freediving

We don't actually arrive at the airport until 5:25pm Saturday. We are making this trip a bit shorter than the others, as I will be having surgery the day after we get back to Panama City! I'm so addicted to freediving that I had to plan our practice sessions in Ft. Lauderdale around my surgery date! We are only going to be on the FIT boat for Sunday and Monday...flight leaves on Tuesday.
Cue slowly playing melody on violin...
You wouldn't believe what I had to go through to convince Todd we absolutely needed to go back to Ft. Lauderdale before Level III--especially since our last 6-day long trip involved NO diving at all (damn seas).
Any chance we could do an evening dive from your boat, Tony?
