Re: Most Summersaults Underwater RECORD

I was skeptical at first, but it was actually quite beautiful while she was doing it. FYI: the more normal English spelling is: "somersault" ["an acrobatic stunt performed by turning the body one full revolution forward or backward, heels over head..."]

A record for "breaching" would be much more important, don't you think? ;-)

Imagine how many you could do on O2. With a scooter. In a cave. Under ice....

Re: Most Summersaults Underwater RECORD

Well, here are the results of my unscientific test:

Experimental Results:
Walked to pool, rested up about 60 sec. Started doing somersaults, lost count and got dizzy, also did not wear weights so slowed down when came to surface. Wife counted 14 and this took about 60 secs and I hadn't got contractions yet (unless you count laughing as contractions).

Conclusions:
30 somersaults it more impressive than at first seems. First problem is to not get dizzy, second problem is to keep count, third problem is to avoid laughing as laughing can be painful underwater while doing somersaults (worse than contracitons), so this girl now has my deep respect.

Cheers Wes

I am not going to translate all of it (unless someone wants to pay me ) but in summary:

This is a show on italian TV which hosts record attempts for the guinness book. Among them, Tom Sietas' O2 static. The anchorwoman barely knows what she is talking about, but to her side there is Umberto Pelizzari who tries to give the right context for the record attempt. Some comments about the girl being nervous, about her mother at the side of the pool, and Umberto recalling how his own mother was also following his record attempts.

The event in issue was to beat the number of u/w somersaults, 28, which already belonged to (or had been equalled by, not clear) the contestant, Francesca Bravin. She must be a teenager, though I didn't hear her age being mentioned in the clip. She has to do it in one minute, never surface out of the water with any part of her body, and never touch bottom or walls of the tank. She is a synchronized swimming athete.

I don't think the problem is running out of air (she didn't do any special breathing, she still had lots of air when she came out), more keeping your balance and staying in the same spot. Remember she had only 1 minute. She managed 30, but the last one was not counted because she emerged. So a total of 29, which is the new record.
