Re: [News] New Species of Manta Ray discovered in Mozambique

Andrea presented some of her findings to the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal Underwater Club last night and it was impressive. It is now confirmed that there are two seperate species, one which is the smaller and is generally resident on reefs, whilst the larger specie is pelagic. The resident species are particularly vunerable to over fishing.

What shocked me was the pictures of dozens of Mantas being caught by fishermen to meet the ever growing demand for "traditional" type medicines. If you havent had the opportunity to dive with Mantas i suggest you take up the opportunity sooner rather than later, Casa Barry lodge in Mozambique (Manta Reef) is a great place to start if your in the area.
