Re: [News] Volunteers join armada searching for diver in Hawaii

The speargun was found 64 miles away from the place he was last seen. The only thing that comes to mind is that he placed a poor shot on a big fish and lost his gun in the fight. However, he could be very far away from where the gun was found. Lets hope for the best. This man was obviously as well prepared as anyone can be to survive these circumstances.

64 miles??!! That's a damn huge distance even for a big fish to drag a gun! Hope for the best for the guy.

Re: [News] Volunteers join armada searching for diver in Hawaii

As usual, stories in the general media leave out details that would be important to those with some spearfishing experience.

For instance, if the gun was not fired and was negatively buoyant, then 64 miles would be a hell of a big deal.

If the gun was equipped with a reel and had been fired, then 64 miles would still be a very long way for a fish to tow it.

If the gun was attached to a float line with a large float on the other end, then the float could have kept it from sinking, even if it had not been fired. In that case, perhaps wind and current could have moved it 64 miles.

I think the last case is more likely closest to the truth, but unfortunately they don't tell us about the details.
