Re: 5mm wetsuit

Does diveskin make their custom wetsuits in open cell material? How much approximately does a diveskin custom made suit cost.

okay this is the third time ive written this because my internet hates me...

DiveSkin does have open cell material but they call it slickskin.

A custom made suit costs the same as one of the regular sizes from DiveSkin. Green Camo Abstract.; I'm getting this suit as 5mm, high waist, nylon exterior, open cell/slickskin interior, and it will be custom made. Costs me $189 US plus $38 for International Shipping. So a 5mm custom made suit comes out to be $227, which is just great by me!

You can also contact Spiros via email through the DiveSkin site. He usually answers within the day, if not 5 minutes

Hope this helps,
Thomas

Re: 5mm wetsuit

Thomas,

Open cell is different than smoothskin (also known as slickskin). The new Cressi Tecnica wetsuits are made with slickskin interior, and I was going to carry them but I wasn't digging the exterior finish on them. I have also seen them on sale for as little as $200.

Re: 5mm wetsuit

oh... on DiveSkin it claims that slickskin is open cell...

"Available in 3 or 5mm with slickskin (open cell) interior and in 3 or 5mm with Nylon interior"

thats taken from the website, i also emailed Spiros about a week ago asking if 5mm was available in open cell and he said yes... i guess i just assumed slickskin was his name for it? now im really confused... my bad...

Re: 5mm wetsuit

Hmmm, .....that is odd. It is probably a slight grammatical or contexual error based on the langauge gap.

Open cell is split neoprene and has the look and feel of a smooth sponge with micro pores. Slickskin is closed cell neoprene and has a shiny smooth finish. Many pure freediving suits are open cell inside with a slickskin exterior. A suit with slickskin interior will keep you warmer than a suit with a nylon interior, but not as warm as a suit with the open cell interior.

Here is a pick of a Yamamoto 45 freediving suit with the slickskin exterior.

Re: 5mm wetsuit

I just got a 5mm suit from diveskin. I asked for open cell interior and nylon exterior. The interior appears to be slickskin rather than open cell, not quite what I expected, but I haven't used it yet so I'll reserve judgement on how good it is.
It is my first spearing suit and I was hoping that the stretchiness of the open cell would impress me but I'm guessing that this slickskin is not so stretchy, getting in was fun!!

I hope that makes sense

Stu

Re: 5mm wetsuit

I bought Diveskin suit last year and it has that sponge like soft layer so I would say it's opencell.

To compare - I also bought scuba suit from Diveskin and that one has waterstops at hood's face edge and THAT is smooth/slick - it's shiny and has more smooth surface than my freediving suit interior.

Re: 5mm wetsuit

How do you rate the quality & value? I have yet to here a bad word about their service or suits?

Re: 5mm wetsuit

It's my first freediving suit so I cannot compare it to another but I'm very satisfied with it as before I got it I used surfing suit and it just wasn't it.
It sits perfectly on my body, so the comfort is perfect.
BTW - I have 3mm.

Only small mismatch with the scuba suit - it should have water stops in the sleeves and trousers also but has it just at the hood. Luckily, even without them I don't have problem with water seeping in so nevermind.

sheepeck, did your order your suit online? if so, did you specify the interior of the suit as being slickskin?

Thanks,
Thomas

Re: 5mm wetsuit

okay so i just got an email back from Spiros concerning the slickskin/open cell material... and i quote (copy & paste )...

"Its the same material.
Medium density neoprene foam (neither too spongy or too shiny)."

Re: 5mm wetsuit

Yap, I bought it through internet so I followed the instructions on the page = it means I used that slick option.
I got it in less then 3 weeks.

Re: 5mm wetsuit

The Diveskin I bought a few years back was indeed open cell as well, but regarding the "open cell is the same as slickskin issue" I beleive there is a communication gap here.

First, I agree with Spiros that it is the same neopreene material, however the finish of this material will be either open cell or slickskin.

Second, it is possible in greece that open cell is refered to as slickskin, and if so I am very curious to know what their name is for what other people refer to as slickskin.

Here is a pic showing open cell next to slickskin.
