just settled in Guernsey from New Zealand, looking to get into diving/freediving over here. Have found some interesting forums on local spearfishing activities which sounds like fun. I,m interested in the prospect of comercially diving scallops over here with particular emphasis on fishery enhancement via larval capture and hatchery production. I enjoyed Old man Daves april 26 , history of the Guernsey scallop industry. I really dont understand how the comercial fishery of scallops opperates over here so would any feedback. I have done most of my diving in and around the bay of Islands area of New Zealand , which has a good range of diving conditions from poor vis on the scallop beds in the channels in the inner bay to 40mtr + at the offshore islands. Marine life is still very abundant, scallop beds are healthy, recreational catch limits are 20 scallops per diver per day and as such numbers are high. Catches can be made in 2 mtrs at low water though 8 mtrs is about best so you need not use scuba and concentrations can be upto 10 per square mtr. I,m new to forums so hope this finds the right audience and I can make contacts with local and non local spearos and comercial scallop divers.
