Evening all, I went down to my local spot last night but there was a sign up warning about sewage pollution (still there today, I guess as a result southerlies and pumping our effluent out at Creux Mahie)! As much as I like finding interesting things while I'm in, I decided to give it a miss.
Went down SW instead and saw a shoal of fish I couldn't identify. They were Breamish shaped but had distinctive vertical black stripes on their, grey silver, bodies. They were about 10-15 of them, although not big enough to take. Any ideas? |

Black bream can have very distinctive stripes when in the water, they tend to become more black once they are dead. The one I saw underwater last year (not been in much this year...) looked very steel blue I guess though no stripes. That was SW I saw it as well.

Tom, scary isn't the word! It makes me feel quite young! Does that mean you've got an old torch for sale second hand? As you know, I'm keen on night diving but too mean to pay more than 10 quid for one!

Should have been a good weeks diving this past week but wasn''t for me. Been a bit under the weather so to speak. Actually so as not to speak as I've lost my voice on top of feeling pretty shitty.
Anyhow was getting frustrated with just looking out on good tides and weather so went in tonight. Only went for an hour and a bit and didn't go too deep but I actually feel a bit better now so my wife was wrong about "killing myself". Vis is okay and the sunset tonight over a mirror calm sea was magnificent. Saw a few fish including a common (freshwater) eel. Ended up with a nice sole, a big red mullet and a small (tasty) plaice. Weighed the red at 2.5lb and the sole at 2.75lb. Can't go tomorrow but Saturday looks good. Dave |

The torch dragged me out to show me what it could do tonight. I found the sun setting over the spot so rigged up and got in.
Not 10m in I came upon a group of nice bass, but hadn't loaded the gun yet so let them carry on unmolested. Went out following a sandy channel and saw plenty of tiny flatties. Out to by some moorings and found the first of 2 OMD size plaice I took. Saw another couple of a similar size but left them alone and took a sole too. Only saw one small red mullet which was a surprise as thought they'd be a few about. Oh, and I saw a small bream that may have been the saem as grob saw. It was only about 2-3inches long, and had vertical black stripes, but not wide stripes like Black Bream get, very narrow, clearly defined stripes, and lots of them. It also had a very distinctive black spot on the root of its tail. I'm off to see if I can identify it after posting this. The torch performed well. Not the brightest lamp in the world but a good spread, long battery life, white not yellow beam and about as sexy as a light emitting device can get Cor but it was cold getting changed though eh! Chuff me Dave, thats a big red mullet! None to shabby Sole either.

Well I've found it, and its as I suspected.
This is definately what I saw, I took a lot of time watching it and noting the details.... Its a White Bream.
