Re: Guernsey 2007

All of those companies do made to measure, all have good reps, all do various camos, its just choosing which one that's hard! Some camo's look effective but I don't like the look of them, others I like the look of but I don't think they'd be that effective, others I'm just not sure about either way!

Thing is, deep down I reckon the camo will have pretty much no effect anyway, expect in making me feel more stealthy than I am! Hey ho. Decided that pay day on the 20th is decision time....

Re: Guernsey 2007

Is there a camo suit that has greens/browns on the top side (backside) and a white/blue camo on the chest side?

If you think about it for a second the camos on the market are only good in one direction. Take a blue/white/grey suit for instance; if you are floating on the surface you will probably blend in quite well to any fish lurking beneath you if it's a nice sunny day, but get on the bottom where it's brown sand and weedy you'll stick out like a sore thumb! Same goes for a green/brown camo suit, it might be fine on the bottom but as soon as your on the surface you'll just look like a big scary black blob!

Look at a plaice/brill - sandy on the top and white on the bottom. If a suit had these colours front and back (with belt, gun etc to match) surely you would be more 'hidden'?

Even if you were lucky enough to buy all the different camo pattern suits, your still only 'hidden' in one view.

Right - wheres me paint brush, sponge (and sperm template) gone?????

I believe sperm are camouflaged white in all directions.

He puts in a lot of hours and has got the results but bear in mind he's the only one catching consistently and the next man in the table only had 4 fish and the person before him only 2 also for a considerable amount of effort.

I can't catch bugger all rod and line this year but have had a few hits on live eels in the Bordeaux tide runs outside Les Vieilles rock area.

Re: Guernsey 2007

Magpie, i also had to make the choice on a new suit, as i only used a sufr suit last year! In the end i went for an elios with camo, but like you i doubt it actually does much, but it does put me in the 'stealth mood! . Whichever you go for, remember that it'll be quite a wait, and so if you make a decision before your payday, then i would advise biting the bullet and getting in front of a few other orders. Mine took a little over a month i think, but that was in February.

Huw.

Exactly - this was my theory re Messerschmidts - mottled brown/ green top, duck egg blue underneath. For those of us cruising mainly on the surface, presumably the white/blue /silvery front is the most important? Also, the idea is to break up the shape. There's also the crapaud idea of local camouflage - i.e. sticking seaweedy bits on. ( Magpie what happened to your "seaman's outfit?" )

Re: Guernsey 2007

Had some more mooring work to do in Rousse today so decided to wear my wet suit rather than the old dry-bag and thus go off for a snorkel/fish afterwards.

Vis was good in the bay, working on the mooring, but when finished I decided to get out, keep the suit on and drive a bit down west to some more bassy ground.

Went in Perelle area just on low tide. Walked miles out over the reefs and into a little bay. Vis was great at first but soon as you cleared the reefs or anything North or West facing then there was a nasty swell. Vis went from a nice clean 15+ foot in the shelter down to less than 6 foot in the swell.

Saw 2 small bass high tailing it offski and that was it. After nearly an hour and a fleeting glimpse of a couple of mullet I rounded the headland and into the southern lee of a big reef. Better vis and some good ground. Went indian right into the shallows. In 2 foot with some bootlace weed already grown to 2 foot high I was just thinking that in summer this area would be full of fish. In fact my mind was wandering which is how I came to be face to face with a nice little bass of maybe 3 or 4 pounds.

I was just noticing how big its eyes were and how much forward they were when you tend to think they're on its side when a message flashes up. "Brain to trigger finger - pull trigger". "Yeh, but should I shoot the old head on kibab shot or wait for it to turn broadside?". Brain to trigger finger - pull trigger". "Oh look it's turned". Brain to trigger finger - pull trigger". "Oh look it's swimming off". "Brain to whole self -too slow you PRATT".

I remember this happened last year. Took me ages to blow off the rust and get my first bass. Maybe it's the age.

Dave

Re: Guernsey 2007

Yello!

Hi my name is Tom AKA Anners, Grew up in Guernsey, lived there for 20 years and yet to dive it. Currently living in Koh Tao Thailand, diving and working as a DM. Taking a videography course and getting more serious about my UW photography. I'm heading back to Guernsey in the summer and plan to dive a lot. I have a couple of friends on here who spearfish around guernsey and would love to get involved with the islands diving.

Loving life underwater.

Happy diving to you all,

Tom

Re: Guernsey 2007

Made up for yesterday with a nice little mixed bag today. Wrasse went 5.5+lbs, bass 3+lbs and mullet 3.5+lb. All head shots from close range with the new Omer XXV Gold. First bass of 2007 (speared) and first with the Omer, but at 1 foot range could have used a house brick, not a real test, still .

Vis was crap, but my reaction time was much improved. Saw a few more mullet but one was enough. Roll on summer.

Roll on summer! I'm happy you made your day Old man.
What's the scientific latin name of that wrasse? It looks quite similar to a couple of species we have here (Tordo nero - labrus merula - or Marvizzo -labrus bergylta -, both of the labridae family) but they're not that big in these waters. We eat them.
I remember discussing with you and your bro about wrasse last year, but my memory fails to remember the ID.

Re: Guernsey 2007

Nicely done Dave, good mixed bag.

Just back from a few days dans le land de la crapaud. Popped into Apnea and had a good chat with the chaps in there and spent a fair while drolling over all the gear.

Managed to restrict my spending to just a new mask and gloves, could have easily maxed out the credit card in there but miraculously had the sensible head on!

Wharro Anners, replied in the topic you started.

Re: Guernsey 2007

Scott, I dont kill wrasse very often because I am a wimp when it comes to shooting such a docile fish!! That is just a personal thing certainly not because they are not good to eat. In fact wrasse seem to make the most delicious fishcakes & probably my favorite smoking fish.
Maggers, isn't it just great to be in that shop but like me, you didn't buy much I think it is all to bewildering ??
