I have a brand new never been used size 12 (small) wet suit to give away to anyone who wants it.
I think it would fit a young lad or teenage girl?

Went in on Saturday with Fabio (arm twisted), had a nice bass in the murk which was luck more than anything else. It cruised past and I let off a shot and the spear felt limp, pulled it in expecting seaweed but had stoned the bass !
Swam down a channel and out round the back of a reef. Thought I'd check the seabed just for kicks to see how bad it was down there and sure enough light started going at about 5m and then at 8m it was a very spooky dark dark green.... just the two dives like that was enough for me to scurry back tot he shallows. Fabio gave me a shout from a way off and I noticed two 'divers' in the water... on closer inspection one was a seal. We watched it watching us for a short while then it went off - gave it some time and then carried on - it didn't show up again so we soon forgot about it and carried on with the search. Anyway, time to head it so I was mooching along at a slow pace a hundred metres from shore or so in the shallows looking at the bottom when I noticed a curved rock that appeared to be floating, it must have been a good three seconds of thoughts like, cool, never seen that rock before, wonder if I can swim under it, strange that I never noticed it before ...when my brain finally clicked into gear and I realised that rocks don't float and certainly don't have fins I panicked and flew one way walking on water and the seal erupted out of the water and went the other way... Fabio was laughing for a good 5 minutes ! |

Good stuff Ed! Before anyone asks, NO, you can't enter seals in the FOM!

I don't think you should enter seals at all
![]() !p.s. I was speaking to a rod dangler at the weekend who reckons both gilthead and couch's sea bream have been caught recently in the Grand Havre area, particularly near " Ed's fishpond". Not much chance of any vis anytime soon around there though...

col, i think the vis isn't too bad - had a look by me today. Looks like it should be calm for a couple of days too... Well done on the bass Ed! |

Went in for a dip this evening, vis is actually ok, but the swell is right down to the bottom - you know how sometimes it can be lumpy on the surface and calm on the bottom... not this time!
didnt see any dinner fish, a couple of small sole which i tried to photo in the surge = lots of blurred piccies :-() small squid, etc. nice to be in the water tho. hoping to take the kayak out tomorrow am... |

I did a bit better. Took just a few of the biggest of the 10 or so small plaice that I saw. Also got a fairly decent red and a nice bass

Hope Dave doesn't mind me answering.
Its a Specimen Hunt. Every year over three weekends (the first being this one) there is a fishing Specimen Hunt whereby the competitors have to catch as many different species above a specified weight as possible. The overall winner is usually in double figures of species by the end. Cobo Boy and Dave are having a little comp whereby Dave spears and CB fishes on the same basis over the same periods. Example weights are: Wrasse 4-8lbs; Sole and Plaice 2lbs; Red Mullet 1lbs; Pollack 4lbs; Bass 5lbs etc etc. (full size list attached). Its going to be interesting as some species will be easier to spear than fish for, whereas many you can catch fishing we never even see spearing. Everything being equal my money's on Cobo Boy but the fishing is far more unpredictable than spearing.

I spotted someone illuminating the Cobo bottom last night as I walked to the Rockmount. It certainly looked a nice colour. I was a bit jealous!
Who was it? Did you have any joy? [m]

As I see it Dave's targets will be: Bass, Wrasse, Plaice, Sole, Red Mullet, Grey Mullet, Golden Grey Mullet, all of which I'd expect him to get, though the Plaice may prove tricky. Then it gets more difficult.
Conger he'll probably be confident of doing, pollack over 4lbs are not that easy to find inshore, scad in the shallows maybe, though not many of them are over a pound, especially when they've had a hole shot in them. Now Cobo Boy I reckon would think to have a fair chance of catching: Wrasse, Bream, Dogfish, Pout, Bull Huss, Conger, Grey and GG mullet, Rockling, Sole, Red Mullet, Pollack, Bass, Mackeral and Longnose....so a much wider scope, but far fewer almost certainties. Ed and me are off after Turbot tonight as long as this wind doesn't play silly b8ggers
