Re: Guernsey 2008

Some of the other UK threads are on about the arrival of the first bass etc but over here they seem to now be present year round. Spoke to a shore angler mate and he had 16 bass and 3 red mullet last week alone. Tale of a shore caught 7+lber on ADM's site yesterday and a picture of a 3+lber bass and a nice red mullet from a couple of days ago.

I am keen to go all year round, well mainly night diving through the winter, but it's the vis or lack of it that stops me. Cold doesn't help but if there's fish and good vis I'll go. Been very busy of late so haven't checked out the vis for a few days. Anyone know? Jonny?

Re: Guernsey 2008

Yes Dave, the bass do seem to be there in more numbers now but nothing like this time last year just yet. At least 2 fish had last night, the 7lb and a 4-1 as well to one of the club boys. I still can't find them but no doubt as soon as I try for something else I'll have one by mistake!!

Re: Guernsey 2008

All the talk of bass is very encouraging, athough I haven't spotted one yet this year.
I've heard the talk about how many are around, obviously not where I go I'm aware how much extra splashing around goes on when I have the camera going, something to work on... I tend to get absorbed in the 'taking the picture' and forget that my fins are flapping away..
Dave, I haven't been out this week, too much work & long hours :-( but I hope to get out tomorrow for at least a couple of hours to make up for it!!! NOt coming in till i'm numb.. the vis wil be appalling no doubt as there's been a good swell all week...
My impression is that there is a significant difference in night time looking for bass as opposed to 'flattie bashing'; in terms of covering the ground as opposed to finding a likely spot and being still, and in terms of focus - on the bottom rather than looking for movement off the bottom.
What do peole think - do the danglers have an advantage with smelly bait as opposed to us seeing the fish?

Re: Guernsey 2008

Well all of the bass I have heard of are Grandes Rocques and South .

No idea with night hunting, you need to ask Foxfish or OMD etc. With shore fishing for them, you need to be right place right time, each mark has only a small window when the bass move through and you need to be there with bait in the water, it takes years of trying to work out their movements, something I am yet to master. Doesn't stop me from spening a couple of hours at a spot when I know they generally only pass through for a half hour period at a certain state of tide though!! No idea if it's the same for spearing them though??

Re: Guernsey 2008

Know of a few out of Grande Havre to 6lbs and had one of 3lbs to L'Ancresse myself.

I'd say rod anglers only have an advantage when the viz is non-existant, but yes, you can easily not see bass if you're focused on the bottom looking for flatties.

During the day being static in one place can be a very effective bass method, but at night you're best off covering ground I'd say, the fish are less wary at night so as long as you're not splashing about you can get very close to them without too much trouble (usually!).

Re: Guernsey 2008

I've got one question, its only short, and is maybe a minor issue and not something you considered before leaving your nice warm dry house, but, did you not stop, just for one moment, however briefly, maybe when you stepped out in the moist cold dampness, and consider asking yourself....

Why?

I've had one of those seriously busy weeks and have been looking forward to a dip all week, kept me going. you can imagine my disappointment when i saw the forecast developing... i'm still newbie enough and daft enough to try anyway sometimes the deeeper water is clearer, but this time I couldn't even figure out which way was up
in a strange way it was fun...

Re: Guernsey 2008

Wow! and I thought I was really sophisticated with my Kiddie's telescope mount!

Onr thing I haven't sussed out, is how people manage to get videos of fish, and fish being shot, when on average I'm in for about 2-3 hrs. and see ( and perhaps shoot!) 2 or 3 fish if I'm lucky. Even with a 2GB memory card, I've got nowhere near that amount of filming time. Are others just lucky, or do they see more fish than me?

Re: Guernsey 2008

Looks good Andy. Is that your new Cayman? Looks very mean. Is it a 75? If so why did you choose it over a 90? Just interested.

Colin I thought the same about video but I'd got my sums wrong. I think a 2 gig card will do about 40+minutes continuous video. Then of couse if you haven't captured anything then you can delete it and start again. That's the beauty of digital and having all the controls waterproofed and accesssable on your camera. You can literally sit on a rock and review/edit your vid. Think my battery will do 2 hours at least so going to try a long/continuous vid this year.
