Did someone say sharks? Funny you should say that, but just around 17 to 18 deg C is when they start to come in... and, in true Chilean style, they are not the cuddly ones, like makos for example (!) but great whites.... they account for quite a few losses a year, I believe, but it is very poorly recorded and researched. Most cases are assumed to be SWB.

Andy the 7mm is to keep your body together after a shark bite so you have a chance to swim ashore.

GOODUN' Mart! I will try a 3mm this weekend and see how long I last. Temp is normally 11 to 12 here, headache type, so this is indeed tropical!

Anyway, in spite of just recovering from flu, having a stiff neck, and an unfavourable tide and weather, I very optimistically tried ormering in my lunch hour today, but predictably saw nothing except 2 baby ones, a sea urchin, baby chancres and loads of ragworm, which I suppose I could have collected for the worm-drowners ( sorry ADM!)

And happy new year to you too Azapa - at least someone is catching something, somewhere!

We are in summer here, clear(er) waters and warm days, sea is even up to a global-warming induced 18 deg. C! the 7mm is staring to feel too much.

This is from last sunday. knife is for scale, looks a little grizzly though. All fish either eaten already or in the freezer. Yum, tandori style on the BBQ for those guys with the orange tail, long thin guys are great as "ceviche".

Nice catch you’ve got there and cooked on the BBQ, still it wont be long before the summer gets to us and its our turn for the BBQ and 17 degree waters.

I took one look at the tides for this set of ormering tides and decided that a 2.2 isn't even worth looking at the beach, even if I was able to turn rocks, which I can't at the moment due to having strained a ligament in my back. Ouchy.

Plus, you're looking under the wrong rocks if you find ragwom, surely?

Were any of the chancres or possible lady crabs (if you saw any) soft or peeling? They normally start to do something this time of year.

5 for me today, well, had 6 but sea fisheries were in the carpark and one had lost a bit of its shell in the bag (honest ) and was 3mm too small so I trudged back down the rocks to put the lucky bugger back.

Andy, the odd rag I saw was in the same area as the small ormers, so presumably in the right area, although of course higher up the beach than usual. None of the crabs I saw appeared to be peelers.

Belated Happy New Year to one and all

Had great time skiing, at least all the bad weather pre christmas meant that there was tons of snow.

Good to see you are all on form, hope this year bodes well for spearfishing.

Listening to Richard Lord on radio bean jar this morning interesting that sea temperatures are now officially 1ºc above the 10 year average. I hadn't given much thought to the amount of energy required to do that, but given that it takes 1 calorie to raise 1 litre of water 1ºc thats a lot of energy!!

No wedding this year so hopefully have more time to use boat and go diving.

Because worms are normally under rocks which are touching the sand/gravel and ormers can't get under buried rocks?? Flawed logic no doubt. Blame it on the pills, making me think all sorts of weird things and feel even weirder.

Nice catch though Tom!! Maybe next tide I'll be down somewhere, though bait seems more attractive than ormers if you ask me... Unless I can use ormers for bait
