Well done Leo. That's a common thick lipped grey mullet. Most people just call them "mullet". For many spearo's that is their first fish. They are common as their name suggests and while they are not everyones favourite fish to eat there is no problem eating them. Generally we give the size of fish by weight rather than length. Mullet grow to over 10 pounds but anything over 5 pounds is a big one. Yours looks more like 3 or 4 pounds, which is a nice sized fish.
Good hunting. Dave |

Nothing wrong with mullet Leo, if you fillet and remove the red meat it's not so strong tasting. Quite nice actually, though Golden Greys taste better

Well done Andy. Think some others were in today. Vis is still good despite bigger tides, strongish westerly winds and lots of offshore breakers. I know it's good 'cause I was in as well.
Managed a last dive before a 2 week break and was going to look for flatties. However, selected bay was a windsurfer racetrack so went further west to seek a bass. I was a bit late for the low and the tide was powering in. Almost straight away got a Golden Grey mullet from a small shoal, yumm! Within five minutes arrived at bass city centre. Shot a small one and was mobbed by bass to 5lb. Managed a quick reload (well quick for open muzzle and 2 wraps - like 5 minutes). Still bass around and so holding my stoned small bass in my left hand managed to pot another bass with the reloaded gun. A much longer reload, stringing and untangling followed, by which time I was alone. Finally sorted I quatered back and forth and soon found another shoal of 7 or 8 bass up to and including one of maybe 5lb. Decided That was the one and tried to stalk it. Passed on a couple of smaller fish as they offered their broadsides and also passed on a kebab/skewer shot on the big one. Was hoping for a head shot and a worthy FOM entry. Eventually all the bass split and I lost the chance. Stayed in another hour plus but only saw a couple of small bass in the distance. Saw a few big thick lipped mullet but let them pass and then saw a single GG that joined his pal on my stringer. A big wrasse was my last sighting but lucky for him I had enough fish for today. Another fun day. Dave PS for anyone who's interested note the small eyes, long pectoral fins, thinner shape, thinner lips and bright gold spot on the GG's. Well I am not going to be much of a threat until my leg completely heals, still rather colourful. However I will be back with a vengeance very soon that is when my boat is finished!

Well done Dave and Andy!
I was in west Sat and Sunday. I also didn't fancy getting sliced up by the windsurfers Dave! Missed everything I shot at on Saturday and there was plenty to go for. Sunday was barren, I wasn't in for long but didn't see a thing. Hopefully tonight will be more productive..... |

So it was you (I think) I went in behind the tea drinking place, I saw another diver in amongst the reefs when I was extracting the lobster. Was going to swim over and say hello but when I stopped faffing about you (if it was you) had gone.

Mmmm, all very cryptic! If you mean north of a certain fort on the south west coast then that was me. I was trailing an Omer float.
Just got back from Ladies Bay, the winds have stirred it up again but it was still OK apart from my mask leaking, getting cramp and having an attack of hayfever (how does that happen?) |

Just got married and hope to move to the MED next year, I know Foxfish partakes in a bit of MEDFISH and finally medfish has sealed the deal for me. But ........ in the mean time ..... spearing in Guernsey. Just finished editing Mcfargons vid !!! I'll try and post it next. so ....... HELLO ! Last edited by tozstyle; July 22nd, 2008 at 20:25. |
