Wood gun from male handle?

I recently acquired a Cannon handle with a male shaft end. Is it possible to make a wooden gun with this? My initial thoughts are that I can either drill out a hole in the barrel and screw in the handle, but I’m concerned that under pressure from the bands the wood would break. I plan on using pieces of teak laminated together. My other idea is to find some sort of coupling to attach the two. Has anyone had any experience with this? Is this just a stupid idea and I should just go buy a barrel?
Thanks

Re: Wood gun from male handle?

It might be easier to buy a barrel and possibly cheaper but it is possible to use a metal sleeve to join the two. If you do use one it does need to be a good fit to stop any movement between the two

Re: Wood gun from male handle?

Thanks for the reply. I started thinking more about it and am planning on doing just that, buying the barrel, and saving the teak for another project. Any ideas on where I can find a "Cannon" barrel?

Re: Wood gun from male handle?

Don't waste your teak on that handle! I don't think you can find commercially available spears that fit a cannon trigger. If you really want to make a gun from it I'd keep it very short <2'. This will keep you from putting too much pressure on the handle; and will let you fabricate spears from 304 ss that won't bend instead of messing around w/ 17 ph which needs to be hardened and is 2x expensive.

If you want a cannon barrel call me. One of my friends from South Carolina has a closed full of Cannon parts that his Dad gave him. If the gun takes a 28mm barrel you could also try Florida Freedivers which may still have Rob Allen surplus barrels w/ the integrated rail.

For your found teak I'd recommend a laminated wood handle that you custom make and an 'American' trigger mech like Riffe, Alexander, Wong. Look for the speargun primer by Sven on the homepage of this site for a good intro.
