By Hawaiian sling do you mean a 3 prong. Which is either a fiberglass, graphite or aluminum rod with 3 smaller steel rods and a length of surgical tubing fastned to the top. Ive heard it called a pole spear also. If thats what your talking about the range is dependent on the length of the spear. As for a shooting string maybe your not talking about the same thing Im thinking about. Ive never used a shooting string. I dont even know what one is. If I can be anymore help Ill try. Good luck on whatever you get.

Hawaiian sling

This is a hawaiian sling. They are simaler to a pole spear sorta. BUt the shaft actually leaves the handle.

Hi Kellya
Fortunatly I dive the crystal waters of S. Florida and Bahamas. I dive the reefs no deeper than I am willing to dive to retrieve a stray shaft or holed up fish. But I have been asked the question in the past. I don't use lines on my slings so I have no experiance to convey but this article by Retro Sub in California seems to sum it up.

I have made shots up to fifteen feet but under ten and within six is more realistic.
Where do you dive?
I am off to Bahamas tommorow and may not respond back until Thursday.
Talk later

Hi kellya,

If you are getting a storebought sling, you willl almost certainly want to customize it to you, it makes a huge difference. PM me and I will lead you through it. Can't help on the line, never used one.

Connor

Nice fish! Nice to see people catching fish this size with the simplest of equipment, just proves the point that we dont always need the most expensive complex speargun fin or whatever on the market!
