Alright so me and my friend are just getting into the sport.. we have two old nemrod guns one band and other air... The air one dosent have a pump anymore and i dont know what size band to get for the other gun so we are just going to get a new one more parts etc...
Fresh water spearing looking for bass or fish like that... Its on a lake so we dont get any big monsters in here. I heard good things about a Aspic 75? Price range is more on the cheap side thinking less than $100 |

Just jump inn there will always be different oppinions about the guns, since you are just starting out the aspic will probably do the job and then you can find out gradualy what you like and dislike for future shopping, only thing is that you should read a little about guns so you get the right size for the conditions in which you dive, you can surely find som old posts on the subjects

I have an Aspic in 75cm that I use in NorCal. It works fine and I have no complaints with it. You should know however that Sporasub is no longer making the Aspic or Viper, and that parts will no longer be available for them. At least that's what their rep told me. Sporasub is now concentrating on their Instinct line of guns, which from what I've seen and heard are very good, but also very different from the Aspic and Viper. I've heard you can pick up the remaining Aspics and Vipers fairly cheap though.
Having said all this, you might also want to look at the Cressi Comanche, which is in the same price range and also a good little gun, or so I'm told. Ron. |

I think you would probably be better off with one of the euro type guns, they are if nothing else powerfull for most fish and accurate too. There have been many people who buy JBL's because of their availability and cost but end up wishing they had sought out better info first

My first gun was a JBL Carbine. At first glance it looks similar to a Euro gun, but falls short in numerous ways. First, the trigger mechanism is not nearly as smooth as any Euro gun I've fired, and with the two little 1/2" stock bands loaded, the trigger is VERY hard to pull. The gun is equipped with a 9/32" shaft and slide ring, and this is the only shaft that will fit the trigger mechanism, which limits you to a threaded shaft. There is no shaft guide on the gun, and the shaft clanks onto the barrel when fired, which is very noisy and also tears up the top of the barrel. Lastly, the barrel is not sealed, so the gun fills with water and sinks with the shaft out.
In a nutshell, if you want a JBL, go with one of their higher end models. If you want something in the Carbine price range, go to this website's store and order a Comanche or the Beauchat Mundile. Ron. (Oh, and I gave my Carbine away as soon as I bought the Aspic...) |

I guess the question is, do you want a 90, or is a 75 a better size for your needs? If a 90 is too long, then it doesn't matter how cheap it is. My 75 Aspic actually started as a 90, but after using it a few times I found that it was just too long and a real nightmare in the kelp and poor vis. I chopped it and the spear down, but that was a real pain.
