help with rigging a polespear

hello one and all,

i picked up a used polespear and i am planning to outfit it with new rubber. i could very definately use some wisdom from a friendly neighbourhood spearo.

the polespear itself, is approx 6ft tall, solid orange fiberglass, of a fairly narrow diameter with a non-removabe paralyzer tip. i recently bought some 16mm (5/8"?) bulk tubing from spearfishinggear.com to use with the spear.

my question-- approx how long a piece of the 16mm should i use?

or.....(related)... approx where on the spear do you want to be gripping it when it is fully loaded? near the top of the spear, 3/4 of the length, 2/3 of the length, ect...

the grip itself should not be an issue, even with the narrow spear, as i found a piece of foam tubing, which slides nicely onto the spear, to widen the grip area. i just need to figure out where, approximately, to position the grip area on the spear (of course matching the tubing length/stretch to this area).

cheers,
sean

Re: help with rigging a polespear

i was just fooling around with the length of 16mm (5/8") and i am thinking this is too thick for a polespear.

any suggestions on tubing thickness to use and where to get it?

cheers,
sean

3/8" is the normal size. You can go a little bigger, but 1/2"(with medium sized ID) is the biggest I'd try.

I use black "theraband". works great and available from most sportsmed/physio clinics. shouldn;t be hard to find in vancouver

Re: help with rigging a polespear

I found that the 3/8 black rubber works best! 16mm!!! I think you would lose your hand!! Thats a bit too thick of rubber for a polespear. You will want to hold as much of the polespear as you can, right at the back of the prongs for a full power shot! I have seen alot of beginers that dont grab high enough on the polespear they say that there hand is sore but you must do it so that the polespear is fast enough to get the fish. You should really use a rubber glove and this would take care of that grip that you were trying to work with, I think a grip like that might slow the shaft down a bit, some guys glue on this sand paper stuff and that might help, but I like too just grab it with a glove! Good Luck

Re: help with rigging a polespear

i really appreciate all the replies and excellent information guys.

i definately made a big mistake getting the 16mm for my polespear --- way too stiff.

coralsniper
thanks for the detailed response, i will keep it in mind when rigging my spear. also it is pretty cold water here in bc so whereever i go hunting i will most certainly be wearing gloves.

fuzz
thanks for the sizing info for the rubber tubing.

amphibious
brillant suggestion regarding the theraband material.
i use this stuff for my various injuries and associated physiotherapies so i know exactly where to get some of the black tubing you mentioned. definately saves me shipping fees getting it locally.

cheers,
