Can anyone comment on the durability of Rob Allen 35L inflatable float? In comparing it with the Aimrite or Riffe floats it seems to have the advantage of a tire inflation valve which means higher pressures (15+ psi) and greater lift at depth. However the literature says that it is a "vinyl inflatable", which I interpret, without having seen one up close, as "cheap pool toy."
Is it as durable as the Aimrite/Riffe? Is it vinyl impregnated fabric similar to inflatable Zodiacs? Any comparisons between these with respect to drag would also be welcome. Gary |

The fabric is very much similar to the inflatable zodiacs yes. I have seen the riffe and RA side by side and I would go the RA most days of the week. The fabric is much better, far from a cheap pool toy.

I've a RA 35 L float and can vouch for its durability. However, that tire inflator can be a nuisance in some out-of-beaten-track places, because you's have to find a gas station. In those cases, you'd have to bring a bicicle pump n your dive bag.

Thanks for your reply, I think I'm going to get the float. Packing a pump along is not a problem as they make them so small now. I have a telescoping pump that fits in the back pocket of my jersey when I go cycling.
On the subject of floats, I was talking with a friend at a dive shop and he said Riffe is coming out with a high-pressure version of its torpedo float, which will likely involve some type of mechanical inflation valve. The intent is to give it greater lift at depth. I believe their current float is just mouth inflated. Has anyone else heard about the new Riffe float? |
