I desperately need help. I'm 16 and am making a second DIY speargun. My first had a bottom mounted line release, but i'm planning on putting a reel on this next one and would need to have a side mounted line release. I could use a breakaway, but the you need to deal with the float and line, while a reel just makes life simpler. Please help!!

Simple enough, but an Aimrite or a Posidensub trigger, they both come with a side mounted line release in American triggers or a Totemsub for a european one.

The beuchatt euro guns all have the line release on the bottom. My buddy has a real on his and has no problem with it. The shooting line just goes around the side of the reel and to the release. When I first saw his set up I thought it would be a problem but never seemed to affect anything.
If you are looking for a trigger mech with the side release try Alexander. His triggers are bullet proof and fairly affordable. Also check out this shop on the Big Island of Hawaii, they sell a trigger similar to alexanders. Im pretty sure the website is www.bigislandspearguns.com. You can contact them via phone and do mail orders. Also, you dont nececarilly need a breakaway system to use a float. Many divers hear just use a clear or blue float line clipped to the back of your gun. Unless your taking down 50lb plus fish you should be ok.

The esiest solution is a Heinrich release, but you have to have a finned or pinned shaft. This system uses no moving parts and is fail-safe.
If you are using a euro gun, then the side-mounted release is pretty simple to install with careful measurement and drilling. The only requirement is to use a mechanism with a slot for the line release. This slot allows the release to touch the sear - when you pull the trigger, the sear moves out of the way and the release moves forward, releasing your line. Mechs that have this slot are made by Neptonic Systems, Aimrite, Steve Alexanders, Bill Kitto, Poseidonsub and Spear-Diver to name a few. Bill Kitto's website has detailed instructions for installing a traditional side line release (just google "Internet Custom Spearguns") |
