Re: where do you draw the line with sharks

Did anybody watch animal planet last night...

They had this awesome program about GWS off seall Island (Shark alley) in False bay cape town. Jean Michl Couseau and his time, first went down with scuba kit, and just watched the GWS swimming around. Later they hooked up with a SA spearo/Shark guide, they went down and freediving, hanging onto the fins of the GWS being towed till they ran out of breath and then surfaced . It was absolutly spectacular to watch.....

I have to admit though the only time im hanging onto the fin of a great white ..... is NEVER

So were actually missing the option for voting. What line sharks are just like kittens and they like it when you scratch them behind the gill plates

Re: where do you draw the line with sharks

Ive seen a clip about that where they swim with the GWs grabbing them on the tip of the dorsal fin, apparantly they dont have nerve endings there. But I think Ill stay in the boat thanx you very much, I like my arms and legs just fine where they are now

Re: where do you draw the line with sharks

A little late in replying but hear goes. I haven't seen the clip but these guys should not be trying to touch the GWS. What purpouse does it serve but their own self reward? I spent 2 days cage diving in Shark ally, Cape Town and watched the infamous Andre grabbing the sharks by the nose on the boat next to us? Come on guys, lets show these animals some respect. It doesn't take much before it ends in tears. After watching Andre the guy in the cage with me decieded to reach out of the cage towards a 6m GWS. He was lucky!! When some idiot loses his life because he watched some "professionals" on TV touch a GWS it ends up with the shark being the evil!

Less touching, more watching (and no, thats got nothing to do with my sex life!!)

Re: where do you draw the line with sharks

When freediving I get out of the water when the sharks become aroused and come up towards you on the surface with open mouths. If they are just swimming around on the bottom or far underneath and it's possible to throw each new fish on the boat immediately after shooting it I keep spearing (with my shark shield turned on each time I shoot something) When spearing on scuba (legal here) and carrying the fish on me I turn the shark shield on after shooting the first fish. No powerheads, too much work and have had them not go off several times. I trust the shark shield unless the shark gets his mouth on your fish beyond it's range, at that point I don't think he'd let go even if you closed the gap (just my opinion). Shooting a shark?? Why?? easy way to lose your gear...last resort only if it charges with jaws open.
