hey people
Coming from carp fishing background and being a complete newbie to spearfishing. i was wondering if you could use ground bait to draw the fish into a area the same sort of way i do when carping? Or would this not be the done thing? cheers |

No idea about your part of the world.
however makos definately do bite and are one of the more dangerous sharks if you see one get out of the area calmly and without wasting time but keep an ey on the shark and don't splash around swim smoothly and calmly so as not to excite it. Peter |

Back on topic: using bait for spearfishing is a common thing in some countries, as well as using "flashers" to attract the fish. But here in the Mediterranean baiting is a no-no, as it is considered "unloyal" and uneffective. More useful for you, in the "Hunting technique" section of the forum, there's a thread called "How to get close to the fish". Some good advice in it. Greetings from cloudy Italy

while i know that baiting is generally a widespread practice for those who hunt for bluewater species (tuna, wahoo, marlin etc..), i think that for reef/rock fish its better to focus on techniques related to stalking, ambush etc... normally i dont feel very comfortable chumming in open sea, youre sure to invite some unwanted guests, but that comes with the territiry if yu hunt blue water...
take care, cheers
