I have just discoverd how tasty morays are in a spicy curry. Problem is they are hard as nails. I don't want to sit there hitting it on the head for ten minutes like last week and i dint want to leave it out the water till it dies, both slow and painfull.
 I have thought about chucking it in the icebox and letting it freeze, I also have a saltwater tank and it is the most human way to kill a sick fish so they say. Option number two is chopping its head off, easyer said than done, about as thick as my arm, slippery and fast as. This guy i know said that eels nerve endings are in there tails so i should whack its tail to stun it then the coup de grar  (spelling) Anyone heard about that before.

Huw that would be great. BTW what part of Cornwall are you from, I'm from Bodmin originally but spent alot of time in Mevagizzy and Constantine bay (great crabbing, that was ten years ago mind you)

I live in Fowey so thats very close to Mevagissy Looe etc. You will have to give me a shout if you are heading back to the Cornwall... it would be good to hunt with someone new  Huw

Thanx for the link, Morays and congers have a lot in common your right, do congers have an infectious bite like morays?
I will be back in the u.k in June, I would probably die in those waters though. I have been enjoying very warm tropical waters for the past 8 years and i can't even imagine getting into that ice box of an Ocean. Guess i will have to get me a dry suit.

nope congers dont have a directly infectious bite like the morays, but they can still do damage if they get hold of a finger, toe or something else  ... not that ive actually ever been bitten myself... just going on what ive heard. I still have yet to spear a conger... but i will take the oppertunity if i come across one.Gimme a PM when you are in this neck of the woods. Huw.

Lol, well im kinda aprehensive, but so many people seem to be fine with it that i think i may as well give it a go. I have caught phenomenal amounts on rod and line with some pushing 50lbs or s , just never seen one in the water ever!
I saw a silver eel on my very last dive of the season which was about 30cm long, but passed on that Since i have nothing better to do now that the water is cold than to look at, buy, and modify gear, i think i will order some new shafts and heads (4 pronger trident in particular) after christmas and maybe a matc shaft... thats what spearo Dave reccomended for them. I guess ill see how it goes, but i have been informed of a spot near where i hunt that has lots of eel in relativley shallow water... so i think a buddy and i will be diving it next summer. It has to be done before i go travelling anyway since if i cant get a conger... a moray will kill me Did your first conger go ok then spearheads? Did you stone it, or have to use the knife? Huw.
