Luckly I didn't get shot nor fined. So the 1.4 KM swim is a must and it's definetly worth it.

"EXCELLENT FISHING AFTER RAIN OR NORTH WIND" = VERY VERY TRUE.

It has been pouring lately in Doha and indeed, I just got back few hours ago from a very great & depressing trip at the same time.

When we arrived to khor odaid, it was windy and raining. Since this is the second week in a row with bad weather, we decided to gear up and swim the 1.4 KM anyway. I was more excited than usual since this is the first time I'm going to use my brand new Omer Carbon T20 gun (love at first sight)

Surprisingly, visiblity was very good (5-6 meters) and the second we got to the spot I saw the biggest 2 Groupers ever, My buddy shot one and I missed the second ... it was huge. There were on orgy of all kind of fish. We had 4 Groupers and 2 sweet lips (4 KG each) on our stringer in less than an hour.

Having secured dinner for a group of friends and my neighbours I tied my gun to my boogie board and the stringer also (5 meter lead) 30 minutes later, I got very tired so my friend offered to trade boogie boards (his was lighter since he was not pulling the fish behind)
Not even 1 minute passed after the trade and about 50 meters from shore, something huge ripped the boogie board from my friend's hands and took off with the board, fish, and my brand new gun (&*^)(*()&^%%&&())_+)

I honestly was scared shitless and didn't care that instant of our losses. We swam with our backs facing the shore and praying to arrive safely.

What the hell was that? can a barracuda do this? was a shark or a dolphin? I have no idea. do you?

I need to find a way to keep the fish out of the water for next time if I build the courrage to go back there again.

Sorry for the long post.
duuuuuude that musta got your harte pumping

sry to hear about your gun ... bummer

were you in the river like area where the current is strong or in a open area ??
im guessing the open area otherwise you could have followed ur float by car when it was taken by the current..

dont forget when ur finning with ur float behind you with 2 sweetlips spinning around its just like your trolling so alot of things could hit them .. but the way u said IT draged it off mmmmm maby it was one of the bigger guys

I've heard that fishing is very promising there, but the problem for me is that you need a boat to get there (I don't have a boat or any friend who has a boat ) I know some guys line fishing from the Four Seasons Marina and they're catching decent size fish.

Hey Baracuda:

I was in the river like part of Khor Odaid (see picture) but when I got to shore I couldn't see the float any longer + it was begenning of low tide so the current was taking it to open sea. I tried going go border patrol, but they said that it was too windy for their boat ... propably they ware just lazy ... it was cold and raining. Anyway, I'm almost over it now but I lost two guns in one month .... my wife is me. I will use my JBL 38 woody (piece of crap gun) until I'm allowed to get a new gun LOL.

Cheers

I have a 5 mm Cressi bought it last year from Langkawi (Garmin dealer) water was cold you don't feel a thing with a 5mm

My float is a blue boogie board with bungee cords strapped on it and my blue ocean mimetic omer gun ... I would be really surprised if you see it, but hey .. you never know.

Thanks for trying

Re: Factors of bad visibility

Hiya

Wind plays a very important roll in the vz. More specifically, wind direction and speed.

For example, in False Bay, when a North Westerly wind blows, it generally cleans up the viz., how-ever, it also pushes in cold water. Certain area's will be 12-14 degrees and crystal clean and other spots 20-24 degrees, with ZERO viz!!

Best bet is to have some-one located close to the sea, whom you can call before going. Alternatively, keep a diary in which you write down the wind forecast EVERY day, and soon you'll see a pattern emerging for your specific area. Very important is to try and get the wind direction that is blowing at the sea and not at your house!! I've often have very little wind at home and then the wind is HOWLING at 30knts+ at the sea!!

Even with me knowing the winds and weather patterns, i still get thrown a curve ball when all the things say that the water should be perfect and then it isn't!! Thats just the nature of the game...................

How-ever, keeping a diary on conditions and catch's will most definitely improve your chances.

Regards
miles

ya offshore winds are defnitly the best .. i didnt know water tempeture played a big part in viz

i thought currents would be the biggest factor when you have a steep high or low tide the current picks up a load of sand and silt but then that dosent
explain why when we go oilrig diving in deep water why some days the viz is exelent and some days it sucks because were very high above the bottom so sand shouldent be able to rise so high..

heres a pic of a good day ---->

Damit Cuda..... Do I smell a betray here????

OK let me start with Gladiator first ...... man Your SOOO DAMN CLOSE to the Saudi borders, actuly am still wondering how they didn't shoot you yet!!??

its very risky and your almost at there lands .. and as I heard these people are really aggressive...

The current in that area is really strong, so you have to study it really good, calculate the time that you spend to reach the area and the time that you stay there very carefully.....
I used to spear 2.5 Km south of your spot... and yes its outstanding ... but very dangerous too.
that area is full of very large Baracudas and queenfish... (queen fish is very strong in the water too, speared one there and almost took the gun from my hand, So for sure what took your gun is a CUDA or a queen.
The area there is very narrow and shallow for a good size shark!!!!

if it was low tide when you lose your gun ..... then forget about it ... its out in the open sea now, if it was high then there is a chance to find it in sheraton area .. (very lettle for sure).

I have a T20 ocean mimetic with omer 50m reel .... if you like I can let you use it some time if we met there or something so you don't forget how it feels in your hand

Will post a review soon for this gun ... man its REVOLUTION in my spearfishing
career ..... I can shoot a dime from a 3m distance with this beauty.

want my advice.... wait for the OMER CAYMAN HF... its even better than the T20.
