Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii

This is my first post so I'll introdue myself. Its only fitting that today was my best spearfishing catch ever. It's probably my 5th time spearfishing- I used my graphite hawaiian sling. just speared about 5 nice sized fish today all in about 20 minutes. I went to a place on the Puna side near where I live that doesn't get fised much and got the biggest unicorn fish I've seen and some triggers plus a nice sized squirrel fish. I've been wanting to get the bigger fish- but just don't seem to have the range and power. I don't like the big parrot fish getting away from me whenever I shoot them nad would like to even go after some alua and other big ones- so I ordered the sling from hawaiiansling.net. We'll see . . .

I'm from Northern California originally, grew up ski racing, and came out to Hawaii about 13 years ago and fell in love. I have 6 acres of land and 100's of exotic fruit trees. We live totally off the grid and I run my F-250 Truck and Mercedes 240D on a veggie oil/gas blend with 10% gas.

I took my sweetie out with me today and she put the nail through the mouth and out the gills and the fish were srung out to the floater water bottle. Now that I'm catching big I think I need a knife to stab them in the head so they dont swim all around on the line- or an icepick.

I also am interested in learning how to freedive deeper. I can swim about 50 feet down now and hold my breath for about 2 minutes. Thanks for all the good words here and I'm glad to join this community.

Well, you could do it like my parents did... They "retired" there.... They bought a house to live in and a couple of older run-down places that they fixed up and resold for a profit... Then, they did it again... and again... and the last time, they kept the places and now rent them out..... They are in Kailua-Kona now..... and here I am in "Freezing-My-Clackers-Off-Frankfurt." What is WRONG with this picture?

Re: Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii

island_sands, If you are seriously planning on coming to the Big Island of Hawaii, let me know. I can tell you were you could stay and if you need a rental car I have 3 mercedes I rent out that run on vegie oil.

Since my first (and only) post I now dive with my 100' Triaxx speargun and a 70' line. No more naked spearfishing! THanks to the deeper blue store I have a nice Cressi suit.

Now I've been spearing some nice fish like Kahala (Hawaii's equivalent to Yellowtail) and just speared the state record (Roi (spotted grouper).

I'll try and upload some pics sometime. The site helped me with my freediving techs and I feel comfortable spearing fish in the 60-70ft, range when my line gets maxed out.
